This course will enable students to have the opportunity to study for both ACCA final level papers and an MSc at the same time, enabling to get both awards in an eighteen month period. The course is a collaboration between the University and Kaplan who is one of the world’s largest providers of professional accounting education.


What happens on the course?

This course enables entry onto the MSc Professional Accounting if you did not gain a first or second class honours at degree level (or equivalent). It will add to your existing skills and knowledge providing you with enhanced understanding and abilities which will prepare you for Masters courses.


The MSc in Professional Accounting and Finance provides an opportunity for you to both complete your ACCA qualifications and also gain a Masters in Professional Accounting and Finance following an eighteen month period of study.


This course will provide you with an in depth grounding for your professional and/or academic career in finance, business and accounting. It will develop your strategic understanding and critical thinking of the main finance and accounting theories upon which modern business decisions are made as well as exploring the role and importance of accounting information in the management of corporations. Through your dissertation you will be able to investigate in depth a business, accounting or management issue, applying your research and quantitative skills which have been further developed throughout the course.

    This module is designed for those students who are studying the MSc Professional Accounting and Finance award. These students will have studied the ACCA Advanced Financial Management AFM and the Advanced Performance Management APM papers with Kaplan Financial Limited as part of the course. The content of this module is the same as these papers covering the areas of strategic planning and control, the impact of risk and uncertainty on organisational performance, performance measurement systems, strategic performance measurement, performance evaluation and corporate failure, responsibility to stakeholders, financial and strategic consequences of potential investment decisions, acquisitions and mergers, corporate re-organisation, and treasury and risk management techniques. By studying these papers the content part of this module will be covered but in order to claim the credits students will have to complete a report which will be designed to capture the learning achieved during this study.
  • Entrepreneurial Financial Management

    Financial management is critical to enterprises. The module aims to introduce different techniques enterprises can use in financial management and evaluate both numerical and theoretical applications of financial management for enterprises. The module will include calculating economic order quantity, optimal cash balance, debt and equity valuations, and optimal capital structure. Agency theory, pecking order logic, and institutional perspective will be introduced as the theoretical underpinning. This is parallel to the debate on finance issues in family firms and women-led enterprises. Government initiatives and policy agenda are also showcased, whilst the impact of institutional intervention is evaluated.

These students will have studied the ACCA Strategic Business Leader SBL and the Strategic Business Reporting SBR papers with Kaplan Financial Limited as part of the course. The content of this module is the same as these papers covering the areas of leadership and ethical skills, governance and responsibility, strategic position and strategic options, analysing risk, information technologies and data analytics, internal control and audit, management of change, professional skills, ethical and professional principles, financial reporting framework and implications of changes in accounting regulation, reporting financial performance, group financial statements, interpretation of financial statements and communication of impact of change to accounting regulations. By studying these papers the content part of this module will be covered but in order to claim the credits students will have to complete an analysis of current developments which will be designed to capture the learning achieved during this study.

    Effective leaders, managers, citizens and employees need to be capable of basing their decision-making on information and knowledge derived from research. The aim of this module is to contribute to the research knowledge and skills appropriate for a taught master's programme and relevant for careers in professional or management roles. The participant is required to produce a dissertation, at an advanced level, based on independent research. This should demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy and core principles of research (empirical or non-empirical) and show their competence in the design, execution and reporting of a research-based dissertation. In this way the participant’s ability is developed to carry out subsequent research, independently and to commission, manage and evaluate the research activities of others. Therefore, the knowledge and skills acquired in the module and of producing the project, will contribute to the student's effectiveness throughout her/his career.

    • Critically evaluate and appreciate the relevance of accounting information for business performance management.
    • Critically assess how the international economic environment affects businesses. Synthesise relevant critical thinking through academic research completing an independent research project/dissertation at masters level.
    • Analyse the different approaches and techniques that facilitate detailed study at the postgraduate level in business and management issues.
  • Entry Requirements A good undergraduate honours degree (preferably second class and above) in accounting which provides exemption from the first nine papers of the ACCA professional qualification from a UK university or overseas equivalent Or, the first nine papers of the ACCA qualification and ideally at least three years of relevant work experience. Students with less experience may be considered. Students may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) subject to the guidelines set out in the UWBS RPL Handbook. RPL includes accreditation of prior certificated learning and /or accreditation of prior experiential learning. Please check our minimum language entry requirements before submitting your application. We offer a range programmes in English as a Foreign Language if you don't meet these requirements.
  • Funding
    • Postgraduate Loan(Home Fee Status): You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £12,858 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk. Any RPL will invalidate your eligibility as you must study a minimum of 180 credits
