What is... Mechanical Engineering?
Course Description
Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, engineering mathematics, and materials science principles to design, analyse, manufacture and maintain mechanical systems.
This course will open up for you a wide range of opportunities in all industries. It stresses the fundamentals while embracing the changes in advanced technology. It also develops the core transferable skills that will prepare you for a career change.
During Year 1, you’ll develop a wide range of practical skills, including welding, metal fabrication, machining, technical drawing, computing and experimental work. These practical, lifelong learning skills are developed further in Year 3 when you’ll undertake an individual project, combining research, design, mechanical development, testing, analysis, presentation and report writing skills.
We place great emphasis on independent learning, through project work, independent assignments and teamwork activities. You’re encouraged to visit industries as part of your studies and report on your findings to your peers and lecturers.
Study Abroad Opportunities
Under the Erasmus course, students have the option to spend a Semester or a full year studying at a partner University.
Professional Accreditation
This course is accredited by Engineers Ireland and graduates qualify for Associate membership of Engineers Ireland. If you successfully complete the course, you’ll satisfy the academic requirements for Associate Membership of Engineers Ireland.

What our students say
I chose to study the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Degree in Mechanical Engineering as I have always had an interest in Engineering and Maths. With this qualification I can enter work in the engineering sector as a technologist or technician involved primarily in the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of mechanical systems. Afterwards, I can pursue an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering through the ladder system in TU Dublin to further my qualifications.
Progression
On successful completion of this course you can apply for Year 3 of TU822 Mechanical Engineering.
