Electrical Services Engineering
=====================================
Overview
This is a three-year part-time course designed to prepare students for careers as Electrical Services Engineers. The course has been designed in close consultation with the Electrical Services Industry. Students will develop expertise in the technical areas necessary to use software packages for electrical services design.
Programme Aims
- Provide a deep seated learning environment for students
- Produce graduates who will exercise engineering skills in a scientific and reflective way, which will enable them to perform to a high level of expertise in modern industry
- Enable graduates to be creative and to think critically
- Enable graduates to develop communication, managerial, personal and interpersonal skills
- Educate graduates on the environmental impact of energy use
- Give graduates the knowledge skills and competence to carry out energy efficient building designs and to operate plant and equipment in the most energy efficient way.
- Enable graduates to integrate renewable energy technologies in buildings
- Allow linkage and transfer to TU Dublin Electrical, Building Services and other engineering programmes within TU Dublin and further afield.
Programme Learning Outcomes
Having completed the course the students will be able to:
- Work as a member of a design team
- Design industrial and commercial electrical installations
- Use appropriate BIM software to produce and revise engineering drawings
- Design and operate automated systems for industrial plant
- Employ standard estimating and tendering techniques for electrical services applications
- Examine, compare and operate data transfer systems used for computer control
- Employ modern application software such as Excel, Amtech, Dialux, or equivalent software, etc.
- Make professional presentations and write technical reports using Power Point, Word etc.
- Develop a personal career portfolio
- Analyse the design and control of modern building environments
- Explain and use standard project management techniques
- Prepare safety management reports and carry out risk assessments
- Configure machine/human interfaces
- Demonstrate capability in problem solving, analysis, and decision making
- Provide engineering systems support for manufacturing industries
- Advise the building design team with regard to comfort, fire safety, green building design and construction.
- Describe and compare different renewable energy technologies suitable for integration in buildings
- Design a renewable energy system for a building
- Evaluate the environmental impact of energy use
Minimum Entry Requirements
- Qualified (National Craft Certificate) electrician, or similar.
- Successful completion of an NFQ Level 6 Engineering programme.
Non-standard Entry Requirements
- Apprentice electricians, or similar that have made adequate progress in pursuit of the National Craft Certificate (e.g. have completed phase 6).
- Relevant Level 6 qualification on approval of Programme Committee (through a non-standard entry application subcommittee).
Career Opportunities
The key to the success of this programme is that it is attractive to a very wide number of industry disciplines, from electrical & building services and energy engineering to project management, BIM specialism and technical design within the built environment. Moreover, with a very broad range of experiences at hand to the students engaged in the course, there are significant opportunities for peer enhancement and career networking through the course.
