Programme Description

The Special Education programme aims to provide students with knowledge in the field of special education through:

  • Attending relevant pedagogical courses
  • Studying relevant literature

Additionally, the programme aims to develop research skills through:

  • Attending specialized courses on quantitative and qualitative research
  • Conducting small-scale research projects within the framework of various courses or/and preparing a Master's thesis
  • Practical training

Practical training is implemented in Greece, covering all provisions of the Institute of Educational Policy's proposal, which sets the criteria for granting relevance to special education master's degrees.

The programme includes:

  1. "Introductory Information Seminar on Practical Training", held in each region of the country at the beginning of the winter and spring semesters, for students starting their practical training in the respective semester.
  2. Practical training (200 hours) in a special education school or a general education school with students with disabilities or special educational needs.
  3. Participation in "Group Seminars with Teleconference" during the implementation of practical training.
  4. Writing and submitting a "Portfolio of Practical Training" paper.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Special Education programme possess a wide range of skills and knowledge, as well as effective teaching practices. They work in primary schools, special schools, or as teaching assistants. They can also pursue further studies in the third cycle (Doctoral Studies).

Admission Procedure

To initiate the evaluation process, applicants must submit the following documents:

  1. Application Form: All fields must be completed, including the field for two recommendations.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. Certified Copy of Degree: A bachelor's degree in Education that allows the student to conduct practical training in special education institutions in the Greek public education system. The degree must include the date of graduation and final grade.
  4. Certified Copy of Analytical Transcript: The transcript must be final, issued after the degree, and include the date of graduation and final grade.
  5. Recognition from DOATAP if the bachelor's degree is from a non-Greek university.
  6. Copy of ID
  7. Personal Statement and Research Interests (approximately 2 pages): A letter outlining the applicant's skills, background, expectations from the programme, and how it will help their personal growth and career development.

Scholarships

Scholarships will be awarded to applicants based on the following criteria:

  • Bachelor's degree grade "Excellent" - 20%
  • Bachelor's degree grade "Very Good" - 15%
  • Special criteria (economic, social, and social contribution) - 10% after submitting relevant documents and evaluation by a special committee.

These scholarships cannot be combined and apply to the programme's tuition fees.

Assessment

Course assessment consists of a final examination (at least 60% weight) and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment may include platform activities, lectures, studies, assignments, teleconferences, and positive participation in the course.

The grade is calculated based on the weight of the final examination, continuous assessment, and the actual numerical grade received in these two assessments. The grade is used to calculate the semester's GPA and the overall CPA.

Graduation

Students must complete 120 ECTS and all programme requirements.

The minimum required overall grade (CPA) is 5.0.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the programme, students are expected to:

  1. Delve into the basic literature of Special Education.
  2. Understand basic concepts, principles, and models of Special Education and apply this knowledge in the school context.
  3. Critically examine research results in Special Education and their implications for problems faced by the school unit and the education system.
  4. Identify problems at the school unit and system level and plan research to address them.
  5. Analyze educational problems critically, considering their sociological, psychological, and philosophical dimensions, and design action to address them.
