Biological Sciences (PhD, 3 Years)

Overview

The PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Nicosia is a rigorous, research-intensive program designed to cultivate independent scientific inquiry and innovation. Spanning three academic years and comprising 180 ECTS, the program provides doctoral candidates with advanced theoretical knowledge and hands-on research experience in cutting-edge areas of biological sciences. Conducted in English, the curriculum integrates interdisciplinary collaboration, industry partnerships, and professional development opportunities. Admission

The minimum requirement for admission to the doctoral degree programme is a Master’s Degree and a Thesis Proposal.


In addition to the above, applicants must also satisfy the following requirements:


  • A strong academic background in biological sciences or a closely related field.
  • A research statement outlining their proposed PhD research and its alignment with the department’s expertise.
  • At least one academic or professional reference supporting their research potential.
  • An interview with the admissions committee to assess research preparedness and alignment with the program.

English Language Proficiency


Students satisfy the English requirements if their first degree was taught in English. Otherwise, they must present:


  • A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based)
  • GCSE “O” Level with a minimum grade of “C”
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.

Assessment

Assessment comprises of the examination of the thesis proposal, the thesis, the presentation of the thesis as a public lecture and the oral examination (viva).


Graduation

The student must complete 180 ECTS and fulfill all program requirements.


Of these, 30 ECTS will be earned through the successful completion of three doctoral-level courses, while the remaining ECTS will be acquired through research, dissertation work, and other academic milestones. Doctoral candidates must meet all academic and research requirements, including passing comprehensive examinations and successfully defending their dissertation.
