Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Program Overview

Anderson University’s Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program teaches evidence-based practices for serving others as a counselor or therapist with a Christian foundation. The program covers topics such as counseling theories and techniques, couples counseling, grief counseling, and psychodiagnostics. Students gain real-world experience through a practicum and two internships. Upon graduation, students are prepared to pursue licensure in the state of South Carolina as a Licensed Professional Counselor. This program is designed to be completed remotely, allowing students to pursue graduate education while remaining rooted in their community.

Admission Requirements

  • Previous Degree Required: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Transcript Required: All college transcripts required.
  • Accreditation Information: The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is pursuing accreditation with CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs). Upon program completion, students will be immediately eligible for licensure in South Carolina. Since each state has its own licensing requirements, students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the specific regulations in the state where they plan to practice.
  • Additional Admission Requirements:
    • Two reference forms from professional contacts.
    • Complete additional short answer questions found in the application portal.
    • Criminal Background Check required for all states of residence within the past five years.
    • Applicants chosen to advance in the application process will be required to participate in interviews.

Career Outcomes

Graduates may choose to work as counselors in a variety of contexts, including clinical settings, church ministries, para-church ministries, private practices, or hospital settings.
