Program Overview


Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education

Overview

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood Education degree prepares students to meet the diverse needs of children today and into the future. This program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to promote the advancement of the social, emotional, and academic development of young children.

Program Description

In this program, students will learn from experienced faculty and gain the skills needed to make a difference in the lives of young children and advance their career. The program focuses on understanding and applying appropriate practices to all aspects of the childhood environment. Students will learn to promote the advancement of the social, emotional, and academic development of young children while understanding the diverse needs of exceptional children.


Field Experience

Students will complete 60 hours of field experience throughout the program, which will provide hands-on and applied learning experiences. This will give students a foundation in child development and early childhood education teaching methods.

The university offers various student support services, including career counseling, internship opportunities, and financial aid.


Bachelor's Degree Pathway

After completing the AAS degree in early childhood education, students can seamlessly continue on to the bachelor's degree. All courses completed for the associate degree will count toward the St. Kate's bachelor's in early childhood education.


Teaching License

Students completing the early childhood bachelor's degree may meet requirements for a Minnesota license to teach children ages 0-8.


Credit for Prior Learning

Child Development Associate: If students have a CDA, they can transfer that in for 5 credits and have ECED 1000: Introduction to Early Childhood Education and ECED 2600: Health, Wellness, and Nutrition waived from their program plan.


Career Outcomes

The program prepares students for careers in early childhood education, including teaching, childcare, and related fields.
