Communication Studies

The Art and Science of Communications

Communication studies is a broad field that encompasses a variety of topics, such as interpersonal communication, group communication, organizational communication, and mass communication.

Prepare to be Discerning Collaborators and Evocative Communicators

Communication studies majors at St. Catherine University will gain theoretical and practical skills in written, oral, and visual communication to be prepared for a career in communications and leadership today.

With career readiness incorporated at every level, you will gain and practice these essential, high-value career skills.

This major is one of two communications majors in the country that requires students to take a leadership communication course. This unique course provides opportunities for extensive self-assessment and delves into issues such as ethics, leadership style, and personal strengths, all with a focus on women's leadership.

You will find your voice and use it confidently and articulately, as well as examine the impact of mass media on gender norms, legislative debates, and social movement strategies.

As a communication studies major, students are encouraged to complete internships - such as in the communications offices of major corporations and small businesses. Recent internship sites include Best Buy, BI Performance Services, Dynamark Corporation, Ecolab, Green Tree Financial, Medtronic, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, KMSP-TV, KDWB radio station, and the St. Paul Heritage and Festival Foundation.
