Overview
The Medical Laboratory Assistant program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work as medical laboratory assistants in a variety of institutions or laboratories. The program focuses on preparing graduates to work as medical lab assistants by providing a solid theoretical and practical foundation in the application of current medical laboratory science, tools, processes, procedures, and practices.

- Program Length: 35 weeks*
- Total Program Hours: 720
- Work Experience Hours: 120
- Practicum Placement: 120 hours
Admissions Requirements
- High School Graduation or Equivalent: OR mature student status (19 years or older prior to starting the program)
- English Language Proficiency:
- Minimum Grade 12 English (Domestic Students)
- For English as second language students:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: overall score of 5.5 or higher
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT: overall score of 46 or higher
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test: overall score of 40 or higher
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP): minimum score of Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5
- Cambridge English Language: B2 First exam (FCE): overall score of 160 or higher
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): overall score of 46 or higher
- Duolingo English Test (DTE): overall score of 95 or higher
- Clear Criminal Record Check: Completion under the Criminal Record Review Program (CRRP)
- Keyboarding Speed: 40 wpm

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Practice safely and ethically as a medical lab assistant
- Provide professional medical laboratory services
- Collect, handle, and process specimens for analysis according to professional and accepted medical laboratory operating standards and procedures
- Use medical laboratory equipment effectively and efficiently
- Use a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques with standard precautions
- Perform cardiac monitoring tests
- Perform medical laboratory administrative tasks and requirements
