Program Overview & Highlights

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program at the University of Windsor is designed for professionals seeking to advance their careers in education. The program offers several convenient options, including a fully online course-based stream, to help students tailor their experience to fit their lifestyle and career goals. With three areas of concentration (Curriculum Studies, Educational Administration and Leadership, and Second Language Acquisition in Culture and Society), students can pursue their interests and develop their skills and knowledge to enhance their professional practice.


Specializations & Streams

  • Curriculum Studies: This concentration enables students to examine philosophical orientations, conceptual frameworks, and research methodologies relevant to the study of theoretical and developmental aspects of curriculum in a Canadian and international context.
  • Educational Administration and Leadership: This concentration enables students to examine philosophical orientations, theoretical frameworks, and research methodologies relevant to the study of educational administration and leadership, policy, and leadership in a Canadian and international context.
  • Second Language Acquisition, Culture and Society: This concentration enables students to examine philosophical orientations, conceptual frameworks, and research methodologies relevant to the study of theoretical and developmental aspects of language acquisition, bearing in mind cultural and societal influences.

Admission Requirements

Previous 4-Year Undergraduate Degree

  • Graduates of recognized universities may be admitted to programs leading to the Master’s degree.
  • A student with a four-year degree or equivalent (e.g., Concurrent Program) in the discipline to which s/he is seeking admission, and who has an academic standing equivalent to 70% or better in the final two years of study (full-time equivalent) may be admitted to a Master’s program (M2).
  • An interest in educational issues
  • At least one year of successful professional experience in teaching or training
  • A Statement of Academic Objectives and Research Interests that describes reasons for pursuing graduate study at UWindsor’s Faculty of Education
  • Complete the Selection of Area of Concentration Form

High School Student from Outside Canada and the United States (International)

  • Graduates of recognized universities may be admitted to programs leading to the Master’s degree.
  • A student with a four-year degree or equivalent (e.g., Concurrent Program) in the discipline to which s/he is seeking admission, and who has an academic standing equivalent to 70% or better in the final two years of study (full-time equivalent) may be admitted to a Master’s program (M2).
  • An interest in educational issues
  • At least one year of successful professional experience in teaching or training
  • A Statement of Academic Objectives and Research Interests that describes reasons for pursuing graduate study at UWindsor’s Faculty of Education
  • Complete the Selection of Area of Concentration Form
  • International Students interested in enrolling in the M.Ed. must demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in English, as the working language of instruction in the Faculty of Education.

Course Sequencing

Course-Based Stream

  • Students are required to complete successfully the equivalent of a minimum of 10 term courses.
  • Three areas of concentration: Curriculum Studies, Educational Administration and Leadership, and Second Language Acquisition in Culture and Society (SLACS)
  • Specific requirements include:
    • EDUC-8001 (Research in Education) and EDUC-8795 (Final Project Seminar)
    • EDUC-8002 (Statistics in Education) OR EDUC-8003 (Qualitative Methods in Educational Research)
    • Candidates in Curriculum Studies are required to complete Fundamentals of Curriculum Theory (EDUC-8004) and 6 additional courses, at least 4 of which must be selected from Curriculum Studies
    • Candidates in Educational Administration and Leadership are required to complete Theory of Educational Administration and Leadership (EDUC-8005) and 6 additional courses, at least 4 of which must be selected from Educational Administration and Leadership
    • Candidates in Second Language Acquisition in Culture and Society (SLACS) are required to complete Theories and Approaches in Language Acquisition and Instruction (EDUC-8006) and 6 additional courses, at least 2 of which must be selected from SLACS

Major Paper Stream

  • Students are required to complete successfully 8 graduate courses plus Major Research Paper.
  • Three areas of concentration: Curriculum Studies, Educational Administration and Leadership, and Second Language Acquisition in Culture and Society (SLACS)
  • Specific requirements include:
    • 2 compulsory courses: Research in Education (EDUC-8001) and Statistics in Education (EDUC-8002)
    • A research project resulting in the Major Paper (EDUC-8960)
    • Candidates in Curriculum Studies proceeding to the degree by Major Paper are required to complete Fundamentals of Curriculum Theory (EDUC-8004) and 5 additional courses, at least 3 of which must be selected from Curriculum Studies
    • Candidates in Educational Administration and Leadership proceeding to the degree by Major Paper are required to complete Theories of Educational Administration and Leadership (EDUC-8005) and 5 additional courses, at least 3 of which must be selected from Educational Administration and Leadership
    • Candidates in Second Language Acquisition in Culture and Society (SLACS) proceeding to the degree by Major Paper are required to complete Theories and Approaches in Language Acquisition and Instruction (EDUC-8006) and 5 additional courses, at least 1 of which must be selected from SLACS

Thesis Stream

  • Students are required to successfully complete the equivalent of a minimum of 10 term courses.
  • Three areas of concentration: Curriculum Studies, Educational Administration and Leadership, and Second Language Acquisition in Culture and Society (SLACS)
  • Specific requirements include:
    • 2 compulsory courses: Research in Education (EDUC-8001) and Statistics in Education (EDUC-8002)
    • Registration and completion of a Thesis Proposal (EDUC-8940)
    • A research project resulting in a Thesis (EDUC-8970)
    • Candidates in Curriculum Studies are required to complete Fundamentals of Curriculum Theory (EDUC-8004) and 3 additional courses, at least 2 of which must be selected from Curriculum Studies
    • Candidates in Educational Administration are required to complete Theories of Educational Administration (EDUC-8005) and 3 additional courses, at least 2 of which must be selected from Educational Administration
    • Candidates in the Second Language Acquisition, Culture and Society concentration are required to complete Theories and Approaches in Language Acquisition & Instruction (EDUC-8006), and are additionally required to complete two of the following four courses: EDUC-8400 (Language Culture and Society), EDUC-8420 (Language Systems Analysis), EDUC-8430 (Special Education and Language Acquisition), and EDUC-8910 (Language Assessment).
