Program Overview


Clinical Exercise Physiology MSc

Overview

This MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology provides students the opportunity to implement evidence-based practice in the support of people living with long- term health conditions. Clinical exercise physiologists specialise in health and fitness screening and assessment, exercise prescription and delivery, and the implementation of behaviour change strategies for the prevention, treatment and management of health conditions.


Course Options

  • MSc: Full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years)
  • Start Date: September 2025
  • Entry Requirements:
    • Academic requirements: 2:1 honours degree in Physiology, Biochemistry, Sports Science, Applied Biology, Physiotherapy or other health-related subjects.
    • Mature students: Can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to study and have relevant life/work experience.
    • International qualifications: We accept a wide range of European and international qualifications.
    • English language requirements: Overall IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in Writing and Reading, 6.0 in Speaking and Listening.
    • Occupational health requirements: Students must obtain Occupational Health clearance.
    • Disclosure and Barring Service: Applicants are required to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Fees

  • Home Applicant (Full-time): £10,800 per year
  • Home Applicant (Part-time): £1,800 per 30 credit module
  • International Applicant (Full-time): £16,740 per year

Modules

  • Technical Skills for Clinical Exercise Physiology: Develops technical skills required to become a competent and effective clinical exercise physiologist.
  • Exercise Prescription in Clinical Populations: Gains knowledge and skills to design, implement and deliver evidence-based exercise interventions for patients with non-communicable diseases.
  • Advanced Clinical Exercise Physiology: Further develops knowledge on the pathophysiological processes of non-communicable diseases and their responses to both acute and chronic exercise.
  • Pathophysiology and Behaviour Change: Develops knowledge of the interdisciplinary nature of working as a clinical exercise physiologist and its impact on health.
  • Clinical Placement: Provides experience and knowledge required to work as an effective clinical exercise physiologist.

Research Areas

  • Applied Sport Sciences Research Group (ASSRG): Investigates topics within sport and exercise physiology, biomechanics, and psychology, along with strength and conditioning.
  • Current Physiological-Based Research: Includes investigating the physiology of performance in endurance athletes and military personnel, along with investigating inspiratory muscle fatigue and the use of prebiotic supplementation.
