Program Overview
Overview
This course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for the 11-to-16 age range, which qualifies you to be a teacher in secondary schools in England and Wales.
At the University of East London, we believe every child is entitled to a high-quality PE curriculum that places their physical, social, cognitive and emotional needs at the core of its purpose.
As a PE student teacher, you will develop into someone who can be responsible for honing pupils' abilities in a range of democratic and lifetime movement activity choices - helping them to develop their movement literacy and important life skills, such as participation, voice, choice, and negotiation skills.
Our state-of-the-art SportsDock facility offers ideal on-site learning facilities in which to develop your teaching skills. But, we also use many of our partner schools to do our practical sessions when we are not in the classroom spaces.
There are three elements to secondary training with us: subject studies, general professional studies and school-based training. It differs from courses offered by other universities in that it is very much subject-based.
Our ethos is based on collaboration, not competition. We encourage you to work collaboratively just as you will when you qualify and start working in a school.

Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with minimum Second Class (2:2) or equivalent in the subject applicant plans to teach.
- GCSE English and Maths grade A*-C/9-4.
- Satisfactory references.
- Satisfactory personal statement.
International Qualifications
We accept a wide range of European and international qualifications in addition to A-levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTEC qualifications.
Interview
An interview is required with a member of the academic teaching team.

Applicants for this course are required to complete a Student Suitability Declaration and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Health Check
Applicants for this course are required to complete an occupational health check.

How You'll Learn
We are superbly equipped for PE training. Initial Teacher Training is based in a purpose-built building at Stratford, with specialist facilities available at our SportsDock complex at Docklands, community venues such as Copperbox on the nearby Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and partner schools.
Class Sizes
We organise our training so that it feels like a school. We teach students mainly in small groups of 30 rather than in large lecture halls of 150 or 300 because you must have plenty of time in your subject groups.
Placement
Your subject tutor will be like your form tutor at school. We believe that we should model good practice to you so that you can learn by example.
You will undertake long placements in contrasting schools, totalling 24 weeks. We work in partnership with over 100 schools and colleges to provide a high-quality programme of support.
How You'll Be Assessed
To pass your PGCE and be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, you have to demonstrate that you have met our curriculum drivers and the Teachers' Standards.
While the course is modular, the emphasis is on the whole process of your development as a teacher. So, rather than a fragmentary approach, there is an ongoing assessment, charting the often subtle transformations in your knowledge and understanding, and your practical skills.
