The Sustainability Research Institute has a thriving research community with a solid theoretical and applied research tradition. Our research integrates multidisciplinary expertise across a wide array of topics related to sustainability. As an umbrella institute across UEL, and with global networks, we also collaborate across UELs research portfolio and beyond.

- Home Applicant (full-time): £6,020 per year
- Home Applicant (part-time): £3,010 per year
- International Applicant (full-time): £16,100 per year
- International Applicant (part-time): £8,050 per year
Entry Requirements
To apply for a PhD course, you should have an MPhil, MRes or MSc qualification or an overseas qualification rated as equivalent. Applicants should have either a first-class or upper second-class honours degree from a UK Higher Education Institution or an overseas qualification rated as equivalent.
Fees, Funding, and Additional Costs
Fees
EU, EEA and Swiss Nationals starting a course from September 2021, will no longer be eligible for Home fees. However, such nationals benefitting from Settled Status or Citizens' Rights may become eligible for Home fees as and when the UK Government confirms any new fee regulations.

- Postgraduate Loans Scheme: £10,280 to fund your Masters Programme under the Postgraduate Loans (PGL) scheme
- Postgraduate Scholarship: Apply for a 50 per cent discount on your tuition fees
- Alumni Discount: Up to 15% fee waiver (exclusions apply)
- Early Payment Discount: 5% fee waiver
- Asylum Seekers scholarship: 100% fee waiver
- Civic Engagement: £1,000
- Hardship Bursary: Up to £2,000
- Sport Scholarships: Up to £6,000
International Students
- Living costs: £1,265 per month to cover your living costs (estimated by UK Visas and Immigration)
- Tuition Fees: £16,100 per year (full-time), £8,050 per year (part-time)
Additional Costs
- Textbooks: You may prefer to, or be required to, buy your own copy of key textbooks
- Computer equipment: You may find it useful to have your own PC, laptop or tablet which you can use around campus and in halls of residences
- Printing: Printing and photocopying costs are not included in your tuition fees
- Travel: Travel costs are not included, but we do have a free intersite bus service which links the campuses and halls of residence
How You'll Learn
All postgraduate research students are supervised by at least two research-active staff. Your supervisors will support your programme of research through regular meetings and reviews.
How You'll Be Assessed
- Your research proposal: Research proposals give us a better understanding of the area you want to study for a PhD
- Thesis: You will be required to submit a thesis summarizing your research
- Oral examination (viva): You will then have to undergo an oral examination (a viva) on your thesis
