Program Overview

PgCert Infection Prevention and Control

Overview

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is fundamental to modern healthcare, and following events like the Covid-19 pandemic has become even more critical. The National Infection Prevention and Control Manual (NIPCM) outlines standards required to manage and reduce the risk of current and future events.

This short course, developed and aligned to the NIPCM, will support you in gaining knowledge and understanding of core IPC areas. You'll study two modules – Foundations of Infection Prevention and Control and Contemporary Issues in Infection Prevention and Control – focusing on a range of different topics and creating assessments reflective of IPC practice.

Why us?

  • Learn from leading regional experts in the field of infection prevention and control, as well as senior academic staff who have experience and expertise in IPC within the NHS
  • Benefit from a course that's been developed to meet the requirements of the NIPCM standards by addressing contemporary issues
  • Our Patient, Carer and Public Involvement (PCPI) participants are integrated into the teaching of this course to enhance your learning experience

Course structure

The course consists of two modules, with one block of 10 weeks per module. There will be 10 on-campus teaching days per module, as well as self-directed study. Teaching will take place at the University for the duration of the course, but there's an expectation that you'll undertake independent learning support to enhance your knowledge.

Learning methods will include lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, problem-solving exercises, and directed and independent study. You'll be assessed via a Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (MiniCEX), preparation of a professional education resource, and a poster presentation.
