Course Overview
This non-accredited short course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to gain Weld Australia AS1796 Certification of Welders - Ticket 9. The course focuses on Submerged ARC welding (plate) and requires students to complete a practical examination.
Course Outcome
Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a Statement of Participation.

Entry Requirements
- Selection criteria: Students must meet one of the following requirements:
- One year's welding experience, subsequent to or during an apprenticeship to an acceptable trade, including 40 hours' training in the welding of plate using an automatic welding process.
- Two years' welding experience and documentary evidence of the successful completion of one or more welding programs, which includes at least 300 hours' training in the theory and practice of welding and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours' training in the welding of plate using an automatic welding process.
- Three years' welding experience and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours' training in the welding of plate using an automatic welding process.
Resources Required
- Students are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
- Workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required may include:
- Protective clothing - long cotton drill trousers, and long-sleeved cotton drill shirt
- Eye protection – safety glasses must comply with AS1338
- Hearing protection - must comply with AS1270 (may be supplied)
- Protective footwear - safety toe, leather upper, non-slip soles must comply with AS2210
- Hair protection - peak cap with a snood capable of fully containing hair
- Welding helmet - it is preferred that you provide your own for hygiene reasons and it must comply with AS1338-1
- Long welding gloves
- If you are required to undertake activities that produce welding fumes you will be required to use P2 moulded half-face respirators, or alternative RPE of equal or higher protection
Important Information
- To obtain the Certification of Welders AS1796 with Weld Australia, students are required to complete theory and practical requirements as outlined by AS1796 Certification of Welders.
- The cost of the course covers the examination by TAFE Queensland, however students will incur an additional fee with Weld Australia at the time of their application.
- TAFE Queensland provides training in the area of welding theory if students are seeking to complete the theory assessment through Weld Australia.
- Students can concurrently complete the practical and theory requirements however, they must apply for certification within two (2) years of having completing both theory and practical assessments.

- Payment plan: If students have difficulty paying for the full cost of a course upfront, they may be eligible for a payment plan.
- Upfront payment: This may be the full fee for the course, or the student contribution amount if students are eligible for a subsidy or concession.
