Course Overview
This Hydrogen Safety skill set will provide you with the required understanding of safety guidelines and requirements when working with hydrogen. It further provides an opportunity for you to gain an awareness of and how to manage associated hazard identification and emergency response procedures relating to working with Hydrogen.
From this skill set you will gain knowledge and skills in the following:
- Knowledge of hydrogen safety
- Knowledge of hydrogen characteristics
- Knowledge of the environmental and sustainable energy policies and procedures
- Understanding of the product and storage of hydrogen
- Understanding of the dangers of working with hydrogen

- UNIT CODE: PUAFER008 UNIT NAME: Confine small emergencies in a facility UNIT DESCRIPTION: This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to confine small emergencies in a facility and it applies to occupants who are required to have first attack firefighting skills. It includes preparing for emergency situations, identifying and assessing an emergency, safely confining emergencies, using initial response equipment and reporting on the facility's emergency response.
- UNIT CODE: UEGNSG031 UNIT NAME: Prepare to work in the gas industry UNIT DESCRIPTION: This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare for, and work within a gas industry environment.
- UNIT CODE: UEGNSG901 UNIT NAME: Apply safety practices, procedures, and compliance standards for handling hydrogen gas UNIT DESCRIPTION: This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to apply safety practices, procedures, and compliance standards for handling hydrogen.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Selection Criteria
- It is highly recommended that you meet the minimum literacy and numeracy levels of Year 10.
- It is strongly recommended that you have access to, and possess a high level of, digital literacy, as portions of the course will be delivered online.
- While not mandatory, it is highly desirable for you to have a background in trades such as electrical, instrumentation, process plant operations, or mechanical. A trade qualification and/or current industry experience is also highly recommended prior to entry.
Resources Required
- You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
- This includes the use of:
- Safety glasses
- Protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
- Long leather gloves to AS2161
- Hair protection
- You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing
- A recommended reading list and/or required textbooks will be provided during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.
- You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationery and device, such as a laptop or tablet, that can access the internet to participate in and access online materials.
