Course Overview

Take the next step in fitness with this entry-level dual qualification and become a personal trainer. Demand for qualified personal trainers is set to expand by as much as 25,000 new positions within the next five years. With this level of growth, demand for skilled fitness practitioners will be high.


You will learn how to instruct personal training programs, group personal training, and exercise for older clients. You will also get the hands-on skills and knowledge needed to operate your own small personal training business.

  • SIS30321 - Certificate III in Fitness: There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
  • SIS40221 - Certificate IV in Fitness: You must hold a current first aid and CPR certificate and have successfully completed the following (or equivalent) units:
    • HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid (or a unit that supersedes this unit)
    • HLTWHS001 - Participate in workplace health and safety
    • SISFFIT032 - Complete pre-exercise screening and service orientation

Selection Criteria

  • International students:
    • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent
    • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent)
    • Students must hold a current First Aid and CPR Certificate and successfully complete 8 pre-requisite units included in the Certificate III in Fitness prior to commencing Certificate IV in Fitness

Resources Required

  • It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Personal stationery items, including four (4) A4 display folders for assessment.

  • Any student enrolling under the age of 18 must be aware that to gain registration in the industry you cannot be insured until you are 18 years of age. This does not affect enrolment but may affect employability options until this age. Please refer to teacher for further information.

Assessment Methods

  • Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
