ESL – Academic Basic Courses

Overview

The Beginner level of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Epic College is designed for elementary learners to build foundational skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW). Each module in the Beginner level consists of 40 hours of structured learning. The course empowers students with practical English for day-to-day use and sets the stage for advanced proficiency in future levels.

Course Objectives

  • To improve pronunciation, reading, writing, and listening skills using fundamental English grammar and vocabulary.
  • To enable learners to skim, scan, and interpret information from basic texts.
  • To develop written expression to describe a process, respond to questions, and summarize simple ideas.

Methods of Assessment

  • Coursework (40%) – Includes individual/group presentations, oral interaction, written tasks (memos, notes), essays, listening/viewing exercises, reading comprehension, and simple translation.
  • Classroom Participation (20%) – Based on motivation and progress.
  • Final Exam (40%) – Includes listening, reading, essay and letter writing, and oral presentation.

Achievement

Students completing the Beginner level will be able to communicate effectively in everyday situations using basic English, applying the LSRW method (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing).
