Program Overview


Awi'nakola

Overview

Awi'nakola, meaning "we are one with the land and sea," combines in-class instruction with land-based cultural learning. Instructors use Kwak'wala and Kwakwaka'wakw teachings to inform academic learning, focusing on student strengths and nourishment for their spirit. Classes focus on student strengths and language to nourish their spirit and work at their level.

Requirements and Courses

Course Requirements

  • One of the following:
    • KWA - 096 Introduction to Kwak'wala I
    • KWA - 097 Introduction to Kwak'wala II
    • KWA - 098 Kwakwala Intro to UMista Orthography
  • Plus two courses from the following list:
    • Note: Courses must be chosen from two different subject areas.
    • Math
      • MAT - 022 Fundamental Mathematics
      • MAT - 033 Intermediate Mathematics I
      • MAT - 034 Intermediate Mathematics II
    • English
      • ENG - 028 Fundamental English
      • ENG - 035 Intermediate English
      • ENG - 052 Advanced English
