Program Overview


Residential Building Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship

Overview

In this building maintenance program, you'll master a wide range of skills to perform duties in alignment with building codes and bylaws. You'll gain hands-on experience in various tasks, from maintaining plumbing fixtures and electrical systems to working with wood, concrete and roofing materials.


You’ll learn:

  • Maintaining and repairing piping, plumbing, electrical appliances and outlets
  • Laying out, measuring, cutting and assembling wood and working with concrete
  • Maintaining, repairing, or removing gutters, roofing systems, insulation and more
  • Interpreting blueprints and understanding building codes and bylaws
  • Gaining certifications like Level One Occupational First Aid, WHMIS, confined space training and fire safety
  • Using safety equipment such as ladders, scaffolding and platforms
  • Strengthening math skills, including metric and imperial conversions and basic geometry
  • Working with carpentry, drywall, shop tools and measuring devices
  • Performing repairs on stairs, decks, roofs, windows and drywall
  • Developing strong interpersonal skills for working with homeowners and tenants

Requirements and courses

Admission Requirements

  1. Registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC
  2. Must be working for an employer with at least one qualified journeyperson.

Apprentices enrolling in technical training must take their training in sequential order. Students must complete all levels of technical training in order to be eligible to write the Interprovincial (Red Seal) examination.


  • RBA - 100 Residential Building Maintenance Worker Level 1
  • RBA - 200 Residential Building Maintenance Worker Level 2
  • RBA - 300 Residential Building Maintenance Worker Level 3
