Course Offerings

• ARAB 121. Basic Arabic I
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
  • Description: Beginning course in Modern Standard Arabic that introduces sound and writing systems and certain morphological and syntactic features. Emphasis on reading, speaking, listening and writing skills.
• ARAB 122. Basic Arabic II
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 121, placement, or permission of instructor.
  • Description: Second course in Modern Standard Arabic with continuing emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and vocabulary acquisition.
• ARAB 123. Basic Arabic III
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 122, or permission of instructor, or placement.
  • Description: Third course in Modern Standard Arabic that continues emphasizing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with advanced study of grammar.
• ARAB 200. Study Abroad
  • Description: Participation in a University of Louisville study abroad program or another program undertaken with prior approval of the Department. Credit is awarded with proof of successful completion.
• ARAB 201. Intermediate Arabic I
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 123, or equivalent.
  • Description: To develop communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Insight into Arabic language and culture.
• ARAB 202. Intermediate Arabic II
  • Term Typically Offered: Occasionally Offered
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 201, or equivalent.
  • Description: Continued work on communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Insight into Arabic language and culture.
• ARAB 300. Study Abroad
  • Description: Participation in a University of Louisville study abroad program or another program undertaken with prior approval of the Department. Credit is awarded with proof of successful completion.
• ARAB 310. Arabic Translation Studies
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall Odd Years
  • Prerequisite(s): Completion of or concurrent enrollment in ARAB 202.
  • Description: A concentrated study of the intricacies and methods of Arabic translation work (both Arabic to English and English to Arabic) and the responsibilities of the professional translator.
• ARAB 313. Special Topics in Arabic
  • Term Typically Offered: Occasionally Offered
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 202 or permission of instructor.
  • Description: Study of an aspect of Arabic literature, culture and/or language.
  • Note: May be repeated once for credit.
• ARAB 321. Arabic Conversation: Communication in Cultural Content
  • Term Typically Offered: Occasionally Offered
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 201, or instructor consent.
  • Description: The goal of this class is to increase communicative proficiency in modern standard Arabic in a variety of situations through the use of everyday scenarios and functional vocabulary.
• ARAB 322. Advanced Writing Techniques in Modern Standard Arabic
  • Term Typically Offered: Occasionally Offered
  • Prerequisite(s): ARAB 201, or instructor consent.
  • Description: The focus is on writing essays using transitional devices and complex sentence structure with a more advanced level of grammar and idiomatic expressions than intermediate ARAB 201.
• ARAB 323. Understanding Journalistic Arabic: Reading and Listening to Arab Media
  • Prerequisite(s): Satisfactory completion of ARAB 201, or instructor consent.
  • Description: This course is designed to increase written and aural proficiency with Journalistic Arabic. It is intended for those students who have completed ARAB 201 and have a strong command of basic structures and vocabulary in Modern Standard Arabic.
