• LAT 101. Elementary Latin I (3 Units)
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
  • Description: Learn to read the masterpieces of Latin literature in their original language. Explore the world and culture of the ancient Romans through the works of Cicero, Caesar, Vergil, Horace, Ovid, Catullus, Seneca, Livy, Tacitus, Sulpicia, and the Latin Vulgate. Strengthen your mastery of English vocabulary and grammar by learning Latin roots and syntax.
• LAT 102. Elementary Latin II (3 Units)
  • Term Typically Offered: Spring Only
  • Description: Read the masterpieces of Latin literature in their original language. Continue to explore the world and culture of the ancient Romans through the works of Cicero, Caesar, Vergil, Horace, Ovid, Catullus, Seneca, Livy, Tacitus, Sulpicia, and the Latin Vulgate. Strengthen your mastery of English vocabulary and grammar by learning Latin roots and syntax.
• LAT 201. Intermediate Latin I (3 Units)
  • Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
  • Prerequisite(s): LAT 102 or at least two years of high school Latin.
  • Description: First semester is a review of grammar with readings in Latin prose.
• LAT 202. Intermediate Latin II (3 Units)

  • Prerequisite(s): LAT 201 or equivalent.
  • Description: Exploration of readings in Virgil's Aeneid.

• LAT 303. Latin Prose Composition (3 Units)

  • Description: Study of Latin idiom and style; practice in translation from English to Latin.
  • Note: May be repeated once for credit.

  • Description: Selections from Livy and Tacitus, Sallust and other major Latin prose authors.

  • Description: Selections from Vergil, Ovid, Catullus and other major Latin poets.
• LAT 501. Special Topics in Classical Latin Prose (3 Units)

  • Description: In-depth translation and analysis of select Classical Latin prose authors and works with special attention given to current scholarship and research.

  • Description: In-depth translation and analysis of select Classical Latin poets and poetic works with special attention given to current scholarship and research.
• LAT 551. Introduction to Medieval Latin (3 Units)

  • Prerequisite(s): LAT 202 or consent of instructor.
  • Description: An introduction to post-Classical Latin and its literature designed to assist students with a background in Classical Latin make the transition to Medieval Latin studies.

• LAT 599. Independent Study in Latin (3 Units)

  • Prerequisite(s): Latin 302 or consent of instructor.
  • Description: Independent study in Latin for in-depth concentration on individual prose and poetry authors and special topics to be specified on a semester by semester basis.
