Course Descriptions

AIRS 101. Department of the Air Force (DAF) Professionalism

• Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
• Corequisite(s): Concurrent enrollment in AIRS 151.
• Description: This course provides an introduction to the Air and Space Forces to allow students to be better informed about the role of the United States Air Force (USAF) and United States Space Force (USSF). The course allows students to examine general aspects of the Department of the Air Force (DAF), leadership fundamentals, service benefits, and opportunities for officers.

AIRS 102. Competition and Security

• Term Typically Offered: Spring Only
• Corequisite(s): Concurrent enrollment in AIRS 152.
• Description: The overarching aim of Course 2, "Competition and Security," is to introduce students to the concept of national security from a broad perspective, encompassing the military's involvement in securing national interests through a range of activities from cooperation to armed conflict.

AIRS 110. Air Force ROTC Independent Study

• Description: Independent study of the organizational structure of the Air Force. Customs, courtesies, benefits available and professional appearance. Also, Air Force core values and the concepts of professionalism and officership.

AIRS 151. Air Force ROTC Leadership Laboratory

• Grading Basis: Pass/Fail
• Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
• Prerequisite(s): Good standing as a cadet or applicant in the AFROTC program as defined by AFROTC Instruction Volume 3, or Department Chair Approval.
• Description: Training in Air Force customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, instructing the other cadets, and the environment of an Air Force officer.

AIRS 152. Air Force ROTC Leadership Laboratory

• Grading Basis: Pass/Fail
• Term Typically Offered: Spring Only
• Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of AIRS 151 and good standing as a cadet or applicant in the AFROTC program as defined by AFROTC Instruction Volume 3, or Department Chair Approval.
• Description: Training in Air Force customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, instructing the other cadets and the environment of an Air Force officer.

AIRS 201. Team and Leadership Fundamentals I

• Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
• Corequisite(s): Concurrent enrollment in AIRS 251.
• Description: This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of both leadership and team building. Students are taught from the beginning that there are many layers to leadership, including aspects that do not always come to mind.

AIRS 202. Team and Leadership Fundamentals II

• Corequisite(s): AIRS 252.
• Description: This course will continue to provide a fundamental understanding of both leadership and team building. Students are taught from the beginning that there are many layers to leadership, including aspects that do not always come to mind.

AIRS 210. Air Force ROTC Independent Study

• Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
• Prerequisite(s): AIRS 102 and AIRS 152, or permission of departmental chair.
• Description: An independent study of general aspects of air and space power through historical perspective. Provides students with a knowledge-level understanding for the general element and employment of air and space power.

AIRS 251. Air Force ROTC Leadership Laboratory

• Grading Basis: Pass/Fail
• Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
• Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of AIRS 152 and good standing as a cadet in the AFROTC program as defined by AFROTC Instruction Volume 3.
• Description: Training in Air Force customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, instructing other cadets and the environment of an Air Force officer.

AIRS 252. Air Force ROTC Leadership Laboratory

• Grading Basis: Pass/Fail
• Term Typically Offered: Spring Only

• Prerequisite(s): AIRS 202, AIRS 252
• Description: Training in Air Force customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, instructing other cadets and the environment of an Air Force officer.

AIRS 310. Air Force ROTC Independent Study

• Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
• Prerequisite(s): AIRS 202 and AIRS 252, or permission of departmental chair.
• Description: An independent study of leadership and management fundamentals, professional knowledge, leadership ethics, problem solving, and communication skills.

AIRS 311. Leading People and Effective Communication I

• Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
• Prerequisite(s): Consent of department chair.
• Corequisite(s): Concurrent enrollment in AIRS 351.
• Description: This course designed to build on the leadership fundamentals taught in AIRS201/202. The students will have the opportunity to utilize their skills as they begin more of a leadership role in the detachment.

AIRS 312. Leading People and Effective Communication II

• Term Typically Offered: Spring Only
• Prerequisite(s): Consent of department chair.
• Corequisite(s): Concurrent registration in AIRS 352.
• Description: This course designed to continue instruction on the leadership fundamentals taught in AIRS201/202. The students will have the opportunity to utilize their skills as they begin more of a leadership role in the detachment.

AIRS 351. Air Force ROTC Leadership Laboratory

• Description: Instruct 100-, 200-level cadets in Air Force customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, developing advanced leadership skills.

AIRS 352. Air Force ROTC Leadership Laboratory

• Description: Instruct 100-, 200-level cadets in Air Force customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, developing advanced leadership skills.

AIRS 410. Air Force ROTC Independent Study

• Term Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
• Prerequisite(s): AIRS 311, and AIRS 312, or permission of departmental chair.
• Description: An independent study of the concept of the Armed Forces as an integral element of society with emphasis on the broad range of American civil-military relations and the environmental context in which US defense policy is formulated and implemented.

AIRS 411. National Security, Leadership Responsibilities and Commissioning Preparation I

• Term Typically Offered: Fall Only
• Prerequisite(s): Consent of department chair.
• Corequisite(s): Concurrent enrollment in AIRS 451.
• Description: Students will learn the basic elements of national security policy and process and will gain further understanding of the basic Department of the Air Force operations as well as understand selected roles of the military in society and current domestic and international issues affecting the military profession.
