Get hands-on with game development in this one-day course designed for technical and creative 14–17-year-olds. Based in our Games Academy Labs and led by expert tutors, you’ll dive into the fundamentals of game production and gain valuable experience to strengthen your skills for future study.

Course Details
Join us for this one-day introduction to game development, designed for technical and creative 14 – 17 year olds. Based in our fantastic facilities and taught by our expert Games Academy staff, you’ll be immersed in the world of game production and will gain valuable experience for future study.
In this course, you will learn about what is required to make a game, including how games are produced, the different roles in a game development team, and the various technologies used to create games. You will also get hands-on with a Game Engine to create a small playable demo, learning skills such as Asset Creation, Level Design, and Scripting.
What You Will Learn
- Dive into the process of Game Creation, with an introduction to the game development process and a look at the commercial games market.
- Explore the different roles in Game Development Teams, giving you more of an understanding of how they might fit your skills in the future.
- Look at the basic operations in a Game Engine, playing with the Unity3d Engine and exploring Gameplay scripting.
- Get hands-on, helping you to produce a short playable game demo.
By the End of the Day, You Will
- Have gained a working knowledge of the Game Development Process.
- Have created a working playable game demo.
- Have expanded your technical skillset and developed your understanding of the games market, for future study.
Course Outline
This is an outline of timings to expect for the course. The day includes 5 hours of taught workshops, and time to socialise with fellow students during supervised breaks.
- 9am - 9.30am: Arrival, welcome, and sign-in
- 9.45am: Groups will be taken to workshop locations (up to a 10-min walk across campus)
- 10am – 12.30pm: Morning workshops
- 12.30pm: Lunch break
- 1.15 – 3.45pm: Afternoon workshops
- 3.45pm: Groups will be collected from workshop locations
- 4pm: Close, sign-out, and collection
Workshops
Workshops on this course will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to Game Development: Introducing you to the Game Development process. This will include discussing the game production process, the different roles in a game development team, and the games market.
- Introduction to Unity3D: In this workshop, we will explore the Unity3D Game Engine, playing with the Engine features to create a basic 3D level.
- Gameplay scripting in Unity3D: We’ll explore how to add Gameplay to your level from the previous workshop. This will allow you to create a core gameplay loop and then go on to create your first game-like project.
- Building Your Game Demo: Within a 90-minute session, we’ll finish by using the new knowledge you’ve gained from the day to create a small playable game. The theme of this game will be based on a prompt given out at the start of the session.
Staff
This one-day course is run by experienced Falmouth University staff from our Games Academy team. All staff teaching this course have enhanced DBS clearance and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day, including break times.
How You'll Learn
You’ll learn via a series of focused, interactive workshops during this day-long course, with teaching content backed up by examples and most of the time spent getting hands-on as you work through each process. Our course leaders will walk you through each workshop in a supportive, fun, and inspiring environment.
Who is This Course For
This course is for creative and technical 14 – 17 year olds who are enthusiastic about games, want to learn more about the industry, and would like to dive in to game creation with the support of our industry-leading Games Academy team. You will need to be familiar with a PC and be able to complete basic IT tasks in order to fully enjoy this course as we’ll be introducing some skills in the Unity Game Engine such as asset creation, level design, and scripting.
What to Expect
Expect to get straight into the game development process, combining learning about how the games market works with getting hands-on creating your own playable game using the Unity3D Game Engine. The course is comprised of structured learning whilst having fun in a supportive and supervised environment. This one-day course is structured with 5 full hours of teaching, with breaks for lunch and refreshments.
What to Bring
You may wish to bring a reusable water bottle with you, and anything else you need to feel comfortable through the day.

All equipment and materials you will need are included in the course fee, together with refreshments and lunch (all dietary requirements catered for).

Location
This course is taught in our professional Games Academy facilities on our Penryn campus. Certificates
You will leave with a certificate of completion, available when you finish the day and sign out.
Eligibility
This course is for 14 – 17 year olds only, and no pre-requisite game development knowledge is required, however, you will need to be familiar and confident with a PC and be able to complete basic IT tasks on your own in order to fully enjoy this course as we’ll be introducing some skills in the Unity Game Engine such as asset creation, level design, and scripting.
Drop-off & Pick-up
A parent or guardian must sign 14 and 15 year olds in and out, and be present for drop off and pick up. If 16 and 17 year olds wish to sign themselves in and out, then we will require written consent emailed to [insert email] in advance of the course. Drop off is from 9am – 9.30am, pick up is at 4pm.
