Course Details
This is an advanced development course suitable for printmakers or artists with some printmaking experience. Please arrive with creative ideas and source materials that you would like to develop during this course.
Working in a small group, you’ll have the opportunity to develop ‘next level’ techniques to work on a large scale. Over 3 days, we’ll be producing multi-layered prints using photographic or hand drawn imagery (or a combination of both) to result in 2 or 3-colour editions.
You’ll learn to successfully prepare your artwork to make hand-made and photo screen stencils, receive full guidance and support in the use of vacuum screen beds, and print an edition of large prints up to a maximum size of A1. We'll be printing with a water washable acrylic ink system, and screens will be coated and prepared for you so that you can immerse yourself in the printing process.
You’ll leave with all the work you’ve developed during the course. All materials are included in the course fee using professional-standard printmaking supplies, and tea/coffee each day.
Course Outline
Over the course of 3 days, you’ll work in our exceptional facilities using our large-scale printmaking equipment to produce A1 multi-layered prints using photographic or hand-drawn imagery. We’ll cover the following:
Day 1
- After an introduction to The Printmaking Centre we'll look at examples and possibilities for preparing positive artwork for your screens.
- You'll be supported to devise a plan for the best way to develop your imagery in screenprint, and there'll be plenty of time to create your positives.
- After a demonstration of how to use the screen beds, we'll process screens ready to begin printing your first layer / proofs by the end of the day.
Day 2
- The morning will begin with a workshop in editing strategies with colour mixing, paper stencils and mono screenprint.
- You’ll then continue screen printing your edition and creating further positives for 2nd or 3rd layers.
Day 3
- Building on the new techniques you’ve learned, you'll spend the final day resolving your print edition with the support of the technical staff.
- There'll be plenty of time for review and reflection and we’ll close with an informal peer review of everyone’s work.
