Course Overview

Get behind the camera for this hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of filmmaking - including camera operation and lighting, editing, and mixing in a specialist facility.


Designed for 14–17-year-olds with a passion for film, this one-day course will offer industry insights and introduce you to essential skills for selected key roles in the screen industries.


Through practical workshops in our professional-standard facilities at the School of Film and Television, you'll gain an introductory understanding of filmmaking, cinematography, sound, and visual post-production.

Course Details

Join us for this exciting and practical one-day Script to Screen course designed for 14–17-year-olds eager to explore the key elements of the film production process.


Working in a supportive and inspiring environment in our professional-standard School of Film and Television facilities, you’ll explore fundamental screen industry skills using industry-standard equipment.


During this course, you’ll experience:


  • A production studio, working on camera and lighting skills
  • A post-production studio, exploring editing
  • A Foley Suite and Dubbing Theatre control room, looking at sound acquisition
  • Our purpose-built cinema, for a final screening of short films made within the School of Film and Television to conclude the day

During the day, you will:


  • Receive introductory practical training in cinematography, sound, and visual post-production
  • Meet a range of professionals in the industry and gain valuable advice based on their experience
  • Meet like-minded individuals with a passion for film and start building your filmmaking network

By the end of the course, you will:


  • Have gained an introductory understanding of the fundamentals of filmmaking, cinematography, sound, and visual post-production
  • Understand crew roles in short filmmaking
  • Have gained an understanding of post-production facilities and stages of the film production process

Staff

This 1-day course is run by experienced Falmouth University staff from our School of Film and Television team. All staff teaching this course have enhanced DBS clearance and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day, including break times.


How You'll Learn

This is a practical course based in a professional environment where you’ll learn by watching demonstrations, discussing ideas and processes, and have the opportunity to get hands-on trying out techniques. Our course leaders will walk you through each stage in a supportive and inspiring environment.


Who is This Course For

This course is for 14 – 17-year-olds and is suitable for all experience levels. It has been designed for teenagers interested in filmmaking, cinematography, sound, or visual post-production who would like to gain some practical knowledge of the film production process and understand the different crew roles.


What to Expect

Expect a hands-on day that will give you practical training whilst meeting professionals in the industry and like-minded individuals. The day will combine structured learning with having fun in a supportive and supervised environment. This one-day course is structured with 5 full hours of teaching, with breaks for lunch and refreshments.


What to Bring

Please ensure you are wearing closed-toe shoes or trainers (e.g., no flip-flops or sandals).


You may wish to bring a reusable water bottle with you, and anything else you need to feel comfortable throughout the day.


Please note: we advise that phones or other personal possessions are not brought to the course, any possessions brought with you are your responsibility, and Falmouth University will not be liable for any loss or damage.


What We'll Provide

All materials you will need are included in the course fee, together with refreshments and lunch (all dietary requirements catered for).


Location

This course is taught in our fantastic Film and Television facilities on our Penryn campus.

Certificates

You will leave with a certificate of completion, available when you finish the day and sign out.


Eligibility

This course is for 14 – 17-year-olds only, and is suitable for all experience levels with no pre-requisite knowledge required.


Drop-off & Pick-up

A parent or guardian must sign 14 and 15-year-olds in and out, and be present for drop-off and pick-up. If 16 and 17-year-olds wish to sign themselves in and out, then we will require written consent emailed to us in advance of the course.


Drop-off is from 9 am – 9.30 am, pick-up is at 4 pm.

Once you have booked your place, you’ll be sent a participant form for further information. You can tell us about any dietary, medical, or access requirements that we need to know about on this form, and you’ll also be asked to confirm that you agree to our code of conduct for under 18s.
