Introduction to Digital Painting

Course Overview

Get hands-on in this creative introduction to digital painting, where we’ll teach you essential techniques and use a Wacom Intuos Pro drawing tablet for your work. You’ll learn to edit and create digital brushes in Photoshop, and experiment with textures and blending. Working from reference material, you’ll create digital paintings through the day ending with a digital self-portrait or landscape from a photo.

How You'll Learn

You’ll learn in a collaborative and creative environment on this one-day course. Cally teaches in an engaging and interactive way, with plenty of examples to guide you through as you learn the basics. You will learn by doing as you engage with the exercises throughout the day.

  • All digital painting beginners who’d like to learn to use a drawing tablet, and creative people who’d like to explore digital art.

What to Expect

  • This will be a creative day where you’ll get hands-on straightaway via a series of taught workshops.
  • 9.30: Arrival and welcome, tea and coffee
  • 10am – 1pm: Morning session
  • 1pm – 2pm: Lunch break (please bring a packed lunch)
  • 2pm – 5pm: Afternoon session

Course Outline

On this course, you will:


  • Learn to set up and use a Wacom Intuos Pro 4 drawing tablet
  • Learn to edit digital brushes to work with your tablet drawing
  • Learn essential techniques to control your digital mark-making
  • Make your own custom brushes from marks made in traditional media
  • Create textured brushes
  • Learn to use Mixer brushes to blend
  • Learn to make colour palettes
  • Take 5 digital print copies of your work home, along with your pack of Photoshop brushes
