What You’ll Learn

1. Describe differences and similarities in how people across the globe experience social, cultural, economic, or political systems.
2. Examine the interactions between societies and individuals.
3. Apply methods of a specific discipline to interpret an expression of the human experience.
4. Identify methods scientists use to explain aspects of the natural world.
5. Use scientific laboratory practices within a field or discipline to investigate a scientific concept.

In addition to the outcomes above, students will gain the skills and knowledge included in Shoreline Student Learning Outcomes (SSLOs): Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Social Justice, Information Literacy, and Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning.

Where does my path start?

You will complete an Associate of Arts - Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) at Shoreline.

Once you complete your Shoreline degree, you can transfer to a four-year school to earn a baccalaureate in Exercise Science or Kinesiology program.

With a strong math and science foundation, this major is also excellent preparation for graduate studies in the allied health professions, Psychology, Business, Law or Education. Additional courses may be required for admission into graduate level professional programs.

General Education - 20 Credits

Courses used in General Education (Gen Ed) Core may not be used for distribution.

Communication (10 Credits)

Multicultural Understanding (5 Credits)

Choose of the following courses: CMST 203, CMST 285, GWS 284, HIST& 220, HIST 245, HUM 105, AES 101, PSYC 230, SOC 270.

Distribution Requirements - 45 Credits

Humanities (15 Credits)

Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g., Art and Drama) in Humanities. Maximum of 5 credits allowed in Performance/Skills courses. No more than 5 credits in a world language at the 100 level. Recommended: CMST& 220, World Language if required for university admission or graduation.

Natural Sciences (15 Credits)

Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g.Biology and Physics) in Natural Sciences. At least 10 credits required in Physical, Earth, and/or Biological Sciences, including at least 5 credits of lab science. Maximum 5 credits from Other Science courses. **Strongly recommended:CHEM 171 or CHEM 172 or CHEM& 121; BIOL& 211, NUTR& 101. **

General Electives - Minimum 25 Credits

Comprised of other college-level courses or unrestricted courses. A maximum of 15 credits allowed for restricted/vocational courses, and a maximum of 3 credits allowed in Physical Education. Please see the lists of Restricted Electives and Elective Courses (Non-restricted). Consult with SCC advisors for recommended electives and choose courses as required by transfer institutions.

Students who study Exercise Science or Kinesiology develop the knowledge and skills to work in a number of health related careers. Depending on area the specialization, graduates work as Exercise Physiologists, Fitness Directors, Personal Trainers, Health and Physical Education Teachers, Coaches and Consultants. Potential employers include: fitness or health clubs, corporate health and wellness departments, sports clubs, sports medicine clinics, non-profit organizations, colleges and universities, public and private schools and consulting firms.
