Program Length & Format
The Master of Arts in English is a 36-credit hour program that can be completed in two years, but can also be completed in less time or more slowly for up to five years for part-time students. Classes meet in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.
Class Times & Location
Both daytime and evening classes are available, allowing students to work full-time while attending school. On-campus classes meet once a week for 3 hours or twice a week for 1 ½ hours each session.
Curriculum and Electives
Graduate students only have one required course and may build their own curriculum for the remaining courses. This allows students to better their skills in a particular area, such as creative writing, literary studies, or professional writing, or work one-on-one with faculty through independent studies, directed readings, and thesis projects.
Thesis & Non-Thesis Options
The thesis option is a good option if students love exploring the English language, researching, and writing their opinions about literature, or have a desire to earn their doctorate in literature. The non-thesis option gives students the tools and resources to push their knowledge and skill set to the next level, whether they are a teacher looking to bolster their career or want to learn how to write for the digital age.
Dual Credit Teaching Certificate
Students can complete the requirements for the English Dual Credit Teaching Certificate as part of their MA in English. It prepares high school teachers to teach English 101: Freshman Composition and English 102: Introduction to Literature to high school students for college credit.
