Are you ready to make a change toward a career dedicated to helping others? Are you an occupational therapy assistant, or similar healthcare professional, ready to take your career to the next level? As an occupational therapist, you can help patients set their goals for getting back to the everyday activities they want to achieve and help them take the steps to reach those goals.

There are two ways to obtain an entry-level Master’s degree in UIndy School of Occupational Therapy. UIndy's Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) 2-day/week program is ideal for career-changers who already have a bachelor’s degree and want to continue working while going to OT school. The MOT Choice Pathway is a 5-day/week program. In either pathway, you'll emerge as a practitioner in a valued occupation where you'll truly impact the health and well-being of your clients.

Mission

The mission of the entry-level Master of Occupational Therapy program within the School of Occupational Therapy is to develop caring and competent occupational therapy practitioners who are lifelong learners and leaders within local, national, and global communities. Students evolve into practitioners who are critical thinkers and demonstrate the ability to understand scholarship to be able to integrate evidence with practice.

Learning opportunities cultivate leaders with high standards of professionalism in existing and emerging practice areas. Graduates impact the health and well-being of clients across diverse populations by facilitating engagement and participation in valued occupations.

MOT vs. OTD

The Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) and MOT Choice programs differ from the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) 2-day/week program primarily by format, research requirements, and clinical experience. The MOT 2-day/week program and MOT Choice Pathway have a focus on evidence-based practice, while the OTD focus is on applied research. MOT 2-day/week program classes are offered on Thursdays and Fridays, allowing for working professionals to remain in their jobs while going to school. The OTD and MOT Choice Pathway are traditional programs with classes offered during the weekdays. Graduates of both MOT and OTD programs are equally prepared for entry-level occupational therapy practice. However, OTD graduates will have more experience with program development, leadership, and advocacy. In addition, students in the OTD program will complete one additional rotation (Doctoral Capstone).

About the Master of Occupational Therapy Program - Graduation Requirements

2-day/week MOT

Program Length & Format

The 2-day/week MOT program is approximately 76 credit hours. The program is completed in 3 1/2 years of academic work, plus various full-time fieldwork experiences integrated in the curriculum and six months prior to completing the program. Classes take place on campus on Thursdays and Fridays, with accompanying coursework to be completed online.

When Can I Start?

The program begins each year in January. Applications must be submitted by Sept. 1. Interviews will be scheduled monthly based on receipt of verified applications.

MOT Choice Pathway

Program Length & Format

The MOT Choice Pathway program is 82 credit hours. The program is completed in 2.5 years of full-time academic work (2-year equivalent). This includes 6 months of full-time fieldwork. Classes take place in a traditional classroom setting, using a combination of lecture and hands-on lab coursework.

When Can I Start?

The program has a traditional August start and is integrated with the OTD program.

Accreditation

The University of Indianapolis Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
