Program Overview
Master of Public Health (MPH)
Overview
The Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the University of Indianapolis is a professional degree program with a concentration in health disparities – preventable differences in the health of various populations. Centered on the core public health values of community collaboration and social justice, UIndy's MPH program intentionally combines academic preparation in current public health knowledge with planned, community-based projects embedded throughout coursework, plus an intensive professional practice experience.
Advantages
- 100% online program allows students to work or take care of other life responsibilities while completing the degree
- Occasional online, synchronous sessions offer students the opportunity to interact and network with fellow students and faculty
- The program is applied, or professional, rather than research-based, so you’ll have hands-on learning opportunities in your own community
- Only program in the Midwest and one of only a few nationwide to concentrate on health disparities
- Centered on the core public health values of community collaboration and social justice, the program intentionally combines academic preparation in current public health knowledge with planned, community-based projects
Program Length & Format
The UIndy MPH degree is a 42-credit program designed to be completed in two years, including summers. For those needing more flexibility, alternate schedules for three- or four-year program completion are available. UIndy’s MPH classes are offered 100% online with occasional synchronous sessions. This makes UIndy's MPH degree accessible to students regardless of where they live and work.
Curriculum
UIndy's unique curriculum provides MPH students the ability to practice essential skills for improving population health such as program planning, monitoring and evaluation, grant writing, culturally competent communication, advocacy, and leadership for improvement of public health. It was designed to provide foundational and practical knowledge, skills and abilities to apply an ecological approach to promoting health and health equity for communities worldwide.
Professional Practice Experience & Capstone
Each graduate student will complete a Professional Practice Experience and related Capstone. The purpose of this experience is to provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills of public health competencies acquired through their core and concentration curriculum in an intensive field-based practicum, and to design and deliver four distinct products in conjunction with their field practicum as their culminating experience for the MPH program.
The Professional Practice Experience and Capstone can be completed in or near the communities where students live and work. In addition, flexible scheduling is often available so working students can maintain their jobs outside of the required professional practice experience.
Potential Careers in Public Health
The field of public health is expansive, allowing graduates to find career paths in the areas of most interest to them. Below are just a few of the many opportunities for job titles, but public health professionals can be found under a broad array of titles in almost any type of setting (health care, government, non-profit, private, industry, etc.). A great resource for those curious would be the book 101+ Careers in Public Health by Seltzer & Krasna.
