MSM vs. MBA

Effective communications, team building, and problem solving abilities are some of the most important skills you can acquire as a leader. Talented managers not only understand what’s best for their business, but also have a strong understanding of how to maximize the performance of their team. UIndy’s MSM program focuses on building these critical skills.

In contrast, UIndy’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program places a greater emphasis on business practices, processes and analysis. The curriculum is practical and consists of a broad range of disciplines, including accounting, finance, marketing, operations management, and data analytics . The MBA Program focuses more on analytical and data-driven subjects, and spends less time on the interpersonal aspects of business.

Why Choose UIndy's School of Business?

UIndy’s School of Business has a long history of training tomorrow's business executives. We were the first to offer an MBA in Indianapolis, are the largest provider of onsite corporate education for Indianapolis-area corporations, and are now the only area University offering an MBA in Artificial Intelligence and Analytics. Our Master of Science in Management (MSM) and Master of Science in Data Analytics (MSDA) Programs complement the MBA by providing learning options with varying degrees of quantitative rigor.

UIndy’s experienced and dedicated faculty, close connection to area industry, and applied learning model–all wrapped in a flexible, online learning model–make it the top educational choice for Central Indiana professionals year after year.

About the MS in Management Program

Whether you have an undergraduate degree in business, communications, biology, or any other field, UIndy’s Master of Science in Management (MSM) Program is designed for you. Regardless of educational background or prior work experience, this degree track builds strong managerial skills and provides students the opportunity to advance their careers. UIndy’s MSM is an excellent postgraduate choice for business professionals seeking an edge in their future.

The MSM Program teaches students how to excel in entrepreneurial, nonprofit, and for-profit environments using organizational strategies, an understanding of work environments and the relationships they consist of, effective communications, and organizational decision-making. It is well suited for a business professional engaged in sales management, human resources management, healthcare administration, or similar industry verticals.

Program Length & Format

The MSM is a 30 credit hour program which can be completed in as little as one year. Students typically take anywhere from 2 - 4 courses (6 - 12 credit hours) each semester. MSM courses are offered online in an asynchronous format.

Curriculum

Sometimes we simply need to add to our personal knowledge toolbox. UIndy's MSM program offers the opportunity to add a new skill by taking a block of three related courses that earns a professional certificate; or a student may opt for the traditional full degree program, consisting of three certificates plus a program capstone course.

Certificates

UIndy's MSM degree includes certificates in Business Foundations, Leadership, and Managing People & Organizations, plus the Capstone (10 total courses):

  • Business Foundations Certificate courses (3)
    • Principles of Finance
    • Project Management
    • Operations Strategy
  • Leadership Certificate courses (3)
    • Negotiation
    • Ethics & Leadership
    • Strategic Management
  • Managing People & Organizations Certificate courses (3)
    • Leading Organizational Change
    • HR Management
    • Managerial Communication

When Can I Start?

UIndy offers courses on a year round basis, with three terms starting in January, May and August, respectively. For instance, students starting in May could complete the MSM program in one year by taking two courses in the Summer session and then four each in the Fall and Spring terms.
