Program Overview
Applying Theory to Conflict Resolution
Course Details
This course examines how conflict resolution theory and practice intersect and relate to one another. In this course, you will explore the "why" of your conflict engagement process and practice - the underlying rationale or justification for your interventions. Any theory is based on assumptions about how and why things work the way they do. Conflict Resolution theory is no different. By questioning the assumptions you have about human behaviour, society and conflict, you will align your conflict resolution behaviours with purpose and intent. By examining a variety of conflict resolution theories, including narrative, transformative, restorative and other evolving theories, you will gain a "cognitive distance" from the automatic repetition of learned process and skills of interest-based practice. This will equip you to assess the effectiveness of your interventions and processes, and allow you to adjust your "theory kaleidoscope" in-the-moment when faced with adversity in your conflict resolution efforts.
