MSc Construction Management

Programme Overview

The MSc Construction Management Programme is an international collaboration between Abertay University and Ecole Supérieure de Conduite de Travaux (ESCT), Vincennes, Paris (delivered in English and French). The programme is an integration of technical, managerial and entrepreneurial concepts in the context of the management of construction projects.

You'll be working with French construction companies whilst undertaking the MSc Construction Management. This puts you in the ideal position to learn the theory whilst putting it into action in real-world environments.

The programme has been developed to meet the requirements of experienced site managers and help develop your career towards senior management positions in construction contracting organisations.

Programme Aims

  • Acquire the tools to address the challenges of managing complex construction projects for the built environment.
  • Acquire the tools to deliver solutions which enable efficient and effective use of limited resources whilst recognising environmental concerns and changing social requirements.
  • Learn how to lead multi-disciplinary teams formed of a variety of key stakeholders which are tasked with delivering high quality urban environments.
  • Develop and undertake in-depth investigation in areas of interest relevant to construction management which integrates knowledge gained, working to a restricted timescale.

Modules

  • Creation and Management of a Company (EEM511)
    • Provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to create, manage, develop and lead a construction company. Module content includes: legal; tax and social; banking; management; commercial.
  • Logistics, Waste Pollution and Processing of Building Sites (EEM512)
    • Provides students with a precise analysis of pollution and waste arising from building sites, treatment options and opportunities to add value to waste. The impact of logistics on a building site is explored in relation to environment and financial performance and opportunities to optimise performance.
  • Financial Management of Construction Operations (EEM513)
    • Enables students to evaluate the direct and indirect costs of a building site, to prepare and analyse a financial strategy for construction operations and provides the skills to analyse and take corrective action against unsatisfactory financial performance, ensuring commercial competitiveness for an organisation.
  • Environmental Management (EEM500)
    • Provides students with a series of practical management tools with which environmental issues can be managed, within both the public and private sector. Students are enabled to examine the policy, legal and ethical framework in which projects operate and to develop the necessary skills to manage diverse teams in a sustainable manner.
  • Innovation in Design (EEM516)
    • This project module focuses on the theory and practice of identifying and implementing innovation of products and systems in organisations. It provides an opportunity for students to critically reflect on analytical, design, planning and evaluation tools that have been included in the programme and to apply these to the design and construction processes of a project that requires innovation and mimics the real-world feasibility design stage of a Civil and Environmental Engineering project.
  • Project Research Methods and Management (SCN421)
    • This module provides the student with the theoretical underpinning required to pursue a detailed investigation of a research topic of choice. It explores the qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and the range of statistical analysis techniques used in conducting research, as well as the development of project management skills.
  • MSc Work Based Project/Dissertation (EEM517)
    • Provides students with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth investigation in a relevant area of interest within an applied context in industry, consolidating theory and examining practice and providing a basis for the writing of a substantial dissertation.

How You Learn and Are Assessed

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching, learning and assessment practices during the course of their programme. Formal lectures are generally used to introduce study areas by imparting key elements of knowledge, outlining concepts and theories, and providing examples of their use in relation to substantive Construction Management problems or issues.

Other teaching and learning activities include seminars with written and oral presentations, and project work centred on the development of specific skills of inquiry and analysis, some of which are student-led.

Laboratory sessions, field trips and industrial visits are used to develop student appreciation of the practical application of research methods and data analysis.

Assessment includes formal examinations, class tests, reports, project work and in some cases assessed oral presentations.

Your assessment culminates in the MSc Project - designed to assess your ability to synthesize knowledge and develop a sustained argument.
