Introduction to Immersive Audio

Overview

This interactive short course focuses on sharing knowledge and providing practical hands-on experience recording and mixing immersive audio using binaural and ambisonic sound technologies.


What You'll Do

This course will cover the following topics:


  • Capture, decode, and listen to immersive audio
  • Binaural sound recording practical workshop
  • Ambisonics practical workshop
  • Editing immersive audio
  • Mixing immersive audio
  • Presenting immersive audio

Location and Dates

The course will take place at Newton Park campus, Bath, on Saturday 8 - Sunday 9 February, 10am - 4pm.


Cost

This short course costs £250 per person.


What to Bring

We recommend you bring your own laptop. In advance of the short course, please download Reaper and IEM plug-in bundle, available for free on PC and Mac. If you don't have access to a laptop, please let us know in advance and we can supply you with one for the duration of this short course.


Meet the Team

Introduction to Immersive Audio is taught by Dr Ruth Farrar and Jan Meinema.


  • Dr Ruth Farrar is a Reader in Creative Media & Enterprise at Bath Spa University and a Co-investigator on MyWorld. She's the founder of Bristol and Bath’s Immersive Audio Network, launched in February 2023. Her PhD focused on creative applications of binaural sound technologies.
  • Jan Meinema is a Course Leader for Bath Spa University’s MA in Sound Design. In the industry, he's a Sound Designer, Supervising Sound Editor, Field Recordist and Re-recording Engineer. He's worked on a range of feature films, short films, documentaries, animations and sound art installations.

Guest Speaker

Hans-Martin Buff will be joining the course as a guest speaker. He is a recording engineer, music producer and 3D audio expert who has worked with artists including Prince, No Doubt and The Scorpions.
