This course is designed to enable care home managers, nurses, and senior care staff working in the care and nursing home sector to enhance their understanding of the needs of people living with dementia.
Course Overview
The emphasis will be on advancing knowledge of dementia to support the delivery of evidence-based practice. Team leaders in care homes are faced with many challenges, and the aim of the course is to provide a theoretical platform to complement their management experience in the delivery of service improvement for dementia care.

- A journey with dementia (Credits)
- The pathophysiology & stages of dementia will be presented with reference to less common types of dementia.
- Theories of Dementia Care (Credits)
- Key theories on dementia with consideration given to the impact and relevance to individuals living in the care home setting.
- Behaviours that Challenge (Credits)
- Understand what presenting behaviour may mean in relation to the individual expressing a need.
- Quality of life factors (Credits)
- Drawing on previous learning about person and relationship centred care, applying the theories to improving the quality of life for people living with dementia.
- Leading a Team in Dementia Care (Credits)
- Exploring leadership approaches, principles of team leadership, and how to inspire a team operating in a pressurised workplace with a dementia focus.
