Overview

The BA (Hons) Archaeology program at the University of Winchester is a comprehensive undergraduate degree that explores the physical evidence of past societies to understand the evolution and cultural history of humanity. The program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of archaeological principles, theories, and methods, as well as practical skills in fieldwork, excavation, and laboratory analysis.

Year 2

• Archaeological Fieldwork and Post-fieldwork Techniques (30 credits)

• The Archaeology of Britain (30 credits)

  • The Making of Classical and Hellenistic Greece (30 credits)

Year 3

• Extended Independent Study in Archaeology (30 credits)

Entry Requirements

• UK: 104-120 points (A-Levels, BTEC, or equivalent)
• International: 104-120 points (International Baccalaureate, or equivalent)
• GCSE English Language at grade 4 or C, or higher
• IELTS Academic at 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all four components (for year 1 entry)

Tuition Fees

• UK/Channel Islands/Isle of Man/Republic of Ireland: £9,535 (2025/26)
• International: £16,700 (2025/26)

Additional Costs

• Excavation: four weeks' compulsory fieldwork in the summer after Year 1 (no direct costs for student participants)
• Further Fieldwork: optional four weeks' archaeological fieldwork in the summer after Year 2 (project-specific costs)
• Field trip module: three-day residential field trip in Year 2 (indicative cost: £150)

Career Prospects

• Graduates are well-equipped to enter the archaeological or heritage profession
• Careers in museums, heritage organisations, commercial archaeology, or local authorities
• The University of Winchester ranks in the top 10 in the UK for graduates in employment or further study according to the Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023, HESA.
