Course Overview

The BSc (Hons) Social Work program at the University of Winchester aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become confident and competent social workers. Course Details

The program is designed to shape "confident learners" by enabling students to develop the skills needed to excel in their studies and future careers. Students are taught primarily through a combination of lectures and seminars, allowing opportunities to discuss and develop their understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups.

Year 2

• First Practice Placement (70 days) (30 Credits)
• The Legal and Professional Knowledge Base of Social Work (30 Credits)
• Social Work Methods And Interventions (30 Credits)
• Psychological Perspectives of the Life Course (30 Credits)

Year 3

• Final Practice Placement (100 days) (30 Credits)
• Risk, Assessment and Safeguarding Work (30 Credits)
• Independent Study on Contemporary Practice (30 Credits)
• Social Work Practice in Contemporary Society (30 Credits)

Entry Requirements

• UK: 96-112 points (A-Levels, BTEC/CTEC, International Baccalaureate, T Level)
• International: Equivalent qualifications and English language proficiency (IELTS Academic at 7.0 overall with no element less than 6.5)

Tuition Fees

• UK/Channel Islands/Isle of Man/Republic of Ireland: £9,535 (2025/26 academic year)
• International: £16,700 (2025/26 academic year)

Additional Costs

• Technology: £20 (Camtasia)
• Disclosure and Barring Service: £49.50 (Enhanced DBS clearance check)
• Access to own transport: Students are expected to participate in placements with practice partners, which may require independent travel
• Placement Travel Expenses: Students may incur costs for travel and/or accommodation during placements
• Core Texts: £100 per academic full-time year (optional)

Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards

• The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) provides a limited number of bursaries for social work students to help with study and living costs

Career Prospects

• Graduates go on to careers in social work or related professional roles in the social care, voluntary and independent sector, health and education sectors
• This program is approved by Social Work England, making graduates eligible to apply for registration as social workers upon completion of the course

Pre-approved for a Masters

• If you study a Bachelor Honours degree with us, you will be pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester, subject to meeting the entry requirements of your chosen Masters degree.
