Norwegian Intermediate
Overview
The Norwegian Intermediate course is designed for students who have a good basic knowledge of the Norwegian language and its grammar. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar to help students communicate confidently in Norwegian.
Who is this class for?
This course is suitable for students who have studied Norwegian for around two years or 180 hours. Students who have completed Part One can proceed to Part Two, and those who have completed Parts One and Two can join Part Three.
Course Structure
The course consists of three parts, each covering different topics and grammar.
Part One
- Media - freedom of speech, trolling, and social media
- Newspaper articles and blogs
- Education - private and state schools, uniforms, and school system
- Current events
- Expressing opinions, agreement, and disagreement
- Norwegian films and television series
Grammar:
- Set phrases and idioms
- Conditionals (if-sentences)
- Past perfect tense
- Word order - subordinate clauses and emphasis
- Countable and uncountable nouns
- Revision of adjectives
Part Two
- Food and recipes - international and traditional food, health, and food customs
- Matpakke - typically Norwegian?
- Older and more recent history of Norway - life in the country and city, gender roles then and now
- Norwegian films and television series
- Current events
Grammar:
- Irregular nouns
- Imperatives with several consonants and ikke
- Set phrases and idioms
- Infinitives with and without å
- Revision of passive
- Revision of other grammar topics
Part Three
- Slang, sociolects, and dialects
- Norwegian politics and social security, the oil fund
- Norwegian popular culture - music, film, literature
- Nature, climate, and pollution
- Sports, exercising, hobbies
- Current events
Grammar:
- Adverbs
- Compound nouns
- Prepositions and prepositional phrases
- Revision of tenses
- Revision of other grammar topics
Teaching
The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language needed to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
Learning Resources
The course uses the Stein på stein textbook and teacher's own materials. There will be a focus on television programs, newspapers, films, news programs, series, blogs, podcasts, and different articles, texts, listening exercises, and websites.
