FinTech with Business Analytics MSc

Overview

This course has been designed to prepare graduates and professionals with the skills to launch a career in FinTech or business analytics.


Gain industry-relevant expertise in blockchain, digital currencies, big data, AI, machine learning and more. Our practical learning approach allows you to apply coding and analytics skills to real-world problems using live market data via the Bloomberg platform in our state-of-the-art Financial Markets Suite (FMS). You will be taught by academics who are actively researching the FinTech sector and industry experts to ensure your skills are at the forefront of this exciting and evolving area. Located in the heart of London, near the City of London, our program places you in the global financial hub.


Course Structure

This innovative course has been designed for learners who wish to specialise in one of the most exciting areas of finance and gain a deeper understanding of finance applications that are transforming the financial services sector. It provides detailed coverage of global financial markets, institutions and their services and securities, alongside a thorough introduction to key aspects of FinTech.


Encompassing both quantitative and qualitative methods, you'll build your knowledge of business analytics, together with the basic programming skills and analytical techniques required for using computational methods in finance. You’ll learn how to use standard industry-based mathematical and statistical packages and select from the range of analytic techniques to analyse current data accessible via Bloomberg or Data Stream.


We also delve into new, more complex emerging technologies, including blockchain, original and new types of cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and predictive analysis. You'll gain a detailed knowledge and advanced learning of a range of AI/ML techniques, including logistic regression, decision tree, Naive Bayes and others to solve problems or to undertake projects in capital markets, asset portfolio and risk management contexts.


To better prepare you to predict future or unknown outcomes in the financial services sector, you’ll learn about big data management, data mining methods and decision-support in a variety of financial services contexts, such as corporate finance, forecasting in capital markets, credit risk, fraud detection and asset management. The course culminates with the option to either complete a work-based placement or a traditional dissertation (research project) in an area of your choice.

  • Blockchain Technologies and Cryptocurrencies: This module delves into the transformative potential of Blockchain technology, equipping you with a comprehensive understanding of its design principles, emerging platforms, and diverse applications. You will explore the evolving ecosystem of Blockchain technology and its applications beyond cryptocurrencies. The module includes guest lectures and a field trip to leading Blockchain enterprises, providing industry insights and real-world applications.
  • Business Intelligence and Analytics in Finance: This module introduces students to business intelligence and analytics in financial contexts, with a focus on classification and clustering methods. You will learn data management, exploratory data analysis, data visualisation, and predictive modelling techniques. The module also emphasises practical applications in finance using specialised software, covering areas such as customer segmentation, risk assessment, and financial decision-making.
  • Capstone Project: This Capstone Project module within the School of Finance and Accounting PG programme offers you the opportunity to gain research methods knowledge and development skills as well as knowledge of how to undertake a work-based project. In the second half of the module, you will be able to choose whether to write a traditional dissertation or a project that is based on or commissioned by an actual organisation. You will also develop transferable skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, time management and communication as they work on their traditional dissertations or work-based projects.
  • Data Science and Machine Learning: Data science and machine learning have become key drivers of business change and value generation in the modern digital economy. This module provides a detailed overview of concepts in business statistics and machine learning, with a particular focus on their applications within the wider financial markets. You will learn the principles behind learning algorithms and any data analysis tasks will utilise specialist software packages.
  • Ethics and Professional Standards: Given the global trend towards more ethical and sustainable business practices, this module equips you with a deep and nuanced understanding of the ethical and professional challenges inherent in the rapidly evolving FinTech sector. Through critical analysis and synthesis of complex legal, ethical, and regulatory issues, students will develop the skills necessary to navigate the intricacies of modern financial technologies. By the end of the module, you will be adept at applying and interpreting professional standards, formulating policy recommendations, and contributing to the development of ethical, compliant, and socially responsible FinTech practices.
  • Financial Markets and Institutions: This module offers a detailed coverage of global financial markets, institutions and their services and securities. Having established an overview of the financial environment, the module considers the role that central banks and monetary policy play in the price development of various key financial markets. The module also examines the role that regulatory bodies and major institutional investors play within global financial services.
  • FinTech Innovation: This module provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the key drivers of innovation within FinTech and the disruptive role that FinTech has played within the wider financial markets. In particular, the module examines how digital payments have evolved and the role that RegTech and InsurTech are playing in the financial regulation and insurance sectors as well as the evolution of automated financial advisory services. We also look at some of the challenges arising from the rapid development of the FinTech sector, particularly around cybersecurity.

Option Modules

  • Banking Technology: This module provides a rigorous introduction to the key aspects of FinTech and to understand the transformational impact of this on the global banking sector. You will develop a detailed understanding of the technological developments in the banking sector and the opportunities and challenges created by these from bank payment processing to Algorithmic trading in hedge funds. In the module, you will learn about FinTech and cover topics such as crypto-currencies, block chain technology and artificial intelligence.
  • Risk Management for FinTech: This module provides a detailed overview of the fundamental types of risk encountered by FinTech firms and examines how these can either be avoided or mitigated. The module extends beyond standard financial risk management by placing greater emphasis on risks like operational risk and enterprise risk management. Finally, the module also looks at how FinTech has created new ways for firms to manage their traditional financial risks, either through the use of new products or through the automation of some of the traditional risk management processes.
  • Sustainability in Finance with ESG: This module provides an in-depth exploration of sustainability in finance, with a strong focus on the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into financial decision-making processes. You will gain an understanding of the available green financial products as well as the relevant regulatory and policy frameworks. You will also how to develop sustainable investment strategies and model climate risk, comply with the relevant regulatory frameworks. In addition, you will encounter some of the challenges facing sustainable finance, with the aim of identifying potential solutions to these.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of a lower second class honours degree (2:2).
  • This degree is designed to enable students from different disciplines to change careers and enter the Fintech field. Students are expected to have a background in a numerical subject to cope with the high levels of programming and statistics involved.
  • Alternative professional qualifications with at least three years of relevant professional experience will also be considered.
  • If your first language is not English you should have an IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.
