Overview

The Environmental Sustainability and Data Science MSc is a multidisciplinary course that prepares students to tackle global environmental challenges by combining the power of technology and data science with the principles of environmental sustainability.


Course Structure

This course adopts a comprehensive learning strategy that emphasizes independent research, study, and active engagement with key stakeholders. Our approach combines a range of diverse teaching methods, including practical workshops, fieldwork, and laboratory sessions, lectures, and tutorials, group work, and presentations and poster sessions.


Core Modules

  • Environmental Sustainability Challenges: This module explores the complex challenges of environmental sustainability, focusing on the need to achieve global economic and social progress while preserving cultural diversity, biological diversity, and the biogeochemical integrity of the biosphere.
  • Introduction to Data Science - Fundamentals of Programming: This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the essentials of data science, starting with the basics of computers and computing fundamentals.
  • Bioinnovation Laboratory: This module explores advanced strategies for the bioeconomy, focusing on bioinnovative solutions, circular economy principles, and the need for inclusive and equitable sustainable practices.
  • Sustainable Solutions with Machine Learning and Big Data: This module aims to advance programming skills and introduce concepts of machine learning and big data analytics using Python programming.
  • Environmental Policy, Assessment, and Climate Change: This module provides background on environmental policy and climate change, setting out the theoretical framework and then the international context for sustainable development.
  • Postgraduate Research Methods: The purpose of this module is to teach the principles and practice of research with a focus on study design and methods of data collection.
  • Postgraduate Project: This module allows students to hone their research skills by undertaking a substantial piece of research.

Option Modules

  • Communicating Science: This module explores topics in science communication and helps develop transferable skills and perspectives in the many ways that scientific knowledge can be disseminated.
  • Data Visualisation and Dashboarding: This module covers the theoretical and practical aspects of data visualisation, including graphical perception, dynamic dashboard visualisations, and static data ‘infographics’.
  • Science, Technology, and Commercialisation: An in-depth study on the scope of commercial biotechnology and starting and financing an operational company.
  • Sustainable Biotechnology: The module aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices that underpin the integration of biotechnology with sustainability goals.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of a lower second-class honours degree (2:2) in a relevant discipline, including science or social science subjects.
  • If the first language is not English, an IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.5 in writing and no element below 6.0 is required.
