Tourism Management MA

Overview

The Tourism Management MA course is designed to give you the knowledge, analytical abilities, and skills you need to make a career as a tourism professional. You'll learn about the nature and characteristics of tourism and explore how it can be marketed, managed, and planned, examining cases from around the world.


Course Structure

The course is divided into core and option modules, which are indicative of what you'll study on this course. You'll be able to choose three option modules, a selection of which are listed below.


Core Modules

  • Research Consultancy Project: The Research Consultancy Project enables you to embark on an extended period of detailed and individual study on a tourism topic with the guidance of a supervisor. (40 credits)
  • Exploring Tourism: Systems and Stakeholders: This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the tourism system, examining its components, dynamics, and interrelationships. (20 credits)
  • Designing and Marketing Tourism Experiences: This module develops an in-depth understanding of the design and marketing of successful tourism experiences from the perspective of the supplier, the consumer, and the host community and environment. (20 credits)
  • Sustainable Planning for the Visitor Economy: This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the sustainable visitor economy through the lens of community planning and its core principles. (20 credits)
  • Responsible Destination Development: This module will develop your understanding of the multiple interconnected issues that destinations face. (20 credits)

Option Modules

  • Airline and Airport Management: The module explores the demand for air travel and prospects for the future. (20 credits)
  • Global Events: This module aims to give you the opportunity to gain in-depth real-world and theoretical knowledge of global event management. (20 credits)
  • Crisis Management and Resilience for Tourism and Events: This module offers you a comprehensive understanding of crisis management principles and resilience strategies. (20 credits)
  • Designing Event Spaces and Places: This module draws on the analysis of events using place-based and urban design perspectives. (20 credits)
  • Regenerative Tourism in Cities: This module explores the complex and fascinating relationship between cities and the visitor economy. (20 credits)
  • The Social and Cultural Value of Community Events: This module explores how events can build community networks, relationships, and opportunities. (20 credits)
  • Contexts of Sustainable Heritage and Intervention: This module develops your understanding of heritage sites by exploring contemporary issues, mapping techniques, and resources. (40 credits)
  • Environmental Policy, Assessment and Climate Change: This module provides background on environmental policy and climate change. (20 credits)

Professional Accreditation

This course is accredited by the Tourism Management Institute (TMI), meaning you can be confident it will give you the knowledge, understanding, skills, and experience which will fully prepare you for a career in tourism destination management.


Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of a lower second-class honors degree (2:2). Exceptionally, an applicant without these formal qualifications but with considerable work experience in tourism or related industries may be accepted at the discretion of the Course Leader.
  • If your first language is not English, you should have an IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.

In the heart of London, our Marylebone Campus is home to the Westminster Business School and our Architecture, Planning, and Tourism courses. Specialist workshops, dedicated digital and architecture studios, and our extensive Marylebone Library offer students everything they need for academic success.


Marylebone Campus is opposite Baker Street tube station and within easy walking distance of Regent's Park and Marylebone High Street.
