Psychology and Criminology BSc Honours

Overview

Psychology is the study of the human mind and our behaviour, while criminology is all about the causes of crime and ways to prevent and control it. This unique degree covers both British Psychological Society accreditation and QAA standards for criminology, allowing you to study both psychology and criminology, and equipping you to understand human motivation and behaviour and apply that insight to legal and criminal contexts, opening up an exciting range of career opportunities once you graduate.

Course Structure

• Year 1: Build your knowledge of a range of core topics central to the study of psychology, including cognitive, biological, social, and developmental psychology. Conceptual and historical issues in psychology are embedded in core modules in both the first and second year, to provide you with a broad appreciation of the place of psychology in the natural and social sciences. You will also build a strong foundation in criminology, with a broad introduction to criminology as an interdisciplinary and critical subject area and you will learn about key concepts and theoretical approaches in relation to the study of crime, victimisation, and responses to crime and deviance.
• Year 2: Builds on the foundations laid in year one.
• Placement Year: Between Years 2 and 3, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a psychology placement year. Completing the placement year will lead to the final award Bachelor of Science with Honours - Psychology and Criminology with Professional Placement. Alternatively, you can undertake a period of study abroad at one of Westminster’s partner institutions. Successful completion will lead to the final award Bachelor of Science with Honours - Psychology and Criminology with International Experience.
• Year 3: Gives you the opportunity to develop your own interests through a range of option modules to ensure that you can tailor your degree to your interests and career aspirations.

Professional Accreditation

This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society and will confer eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, provided the minimum standard of a Lower Second Class Honours is achieved, and the empirical project has been passed. This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

  • Other international qualifications – We accept a wide range of international high school level qualifications.
  • International Foundation courses – We work in partnership with Kaplan International College London who provide the International Foundation Certificate at their College based in Liverpool Street.
  • English language requirements – If your first language is not English, you will need an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component.

Fees and Funding

• UK tuition fee: £9,535 (Price per academic year)
• International tuition fee: £17,600 (Price per academic year)
• Funding – As well as tuition fee loans, there is a range of funding available to help you fund your studies.
• Scholarships – The University is dedicated to supporting ambitious and outstanding students and we offer a variety of scholarships to eligible undergraduate students, which cover all or part of your tuition fees.

Course Location

• Teaching for this course will take place at both our Regent Street site and Cavendish Campus in central London.
• Our Regent Campus is comprised of two sites, situated on and around Regent Street – one of the most famous and vibrant streets in London.
• Our Cavendish Campus offers our science and technology students a range of learning spaces that are both dynamic and inspiring.
