Real Estate Development MSc
Overview
The Real Estate Development MSc is a practical Master's course that prepares students to adapt and excel in the complex and ever-changing real estate market. The course is informed by the University's extensive commercial and professional partnerships within the property sector.
Course Structure
The course consists of seven core modules and one option module, totaling 180 credits. The modules are designed to provide a detailed understanding of the property development and appraisal process, encompassing valuation, financial, physical, legal, and social aspects.
Core Modules
- Asset Management: This module aims to set corporate decision-making in the context of the business environment, corporate goals, and the practice of company finance, estate, and portfolio management.
- Project: This module enables students to produce a report based on an individually conducted research project.
- Law for Property Professionals: This module fosters reflection on where the law comes from and how it develops, and encourages understanding of the relationship between the legal process and social change.
- Property Development: This module critically examines the stages involved in developing land and properties, and the roles of key players involved in appraising physical, legal, financial, and social aspects required for a successful outcome.
- Property Finance: This module addresses the strategic role of lending in the property sector, including the history of lender involvement, risk assessment, and risk mitigation.
- Property Valuation: This module critically evaluates the merits and limitations of traditional and contemporary approaches to real estate valuation in the broad economic, financial, and social context.
- Sustainability and Real Estate: This module develops a strategic approach to the implementation of sustainability into a building's lifecycle, focusing on stakeholders' roles, responsibilities, and decision-making.
Option Modules
- Applied Valuation: This module centers upon methods of valuation applicable to properties for rating, compulsory purchase purposes, leasehold enfranchisement, and properties subject to the housing acts.
- Landlord and Tenant: This module covers the concepts and law surrounding commercial lease practice and rent reviews/lease negotiation, from both a landlord's and tenant's perspective.
- Planning in Practice: This module provides an overview of the planning system in England and Wales, examining what planners do in practice and the role of planning in the property development process.
- Property Investment Portfolio Analysis: This module acquaints students with integrated theoretical and practical concepts and knowledge on property investment, examining the changing legislation and regulations relating to the management of property as a financial and investment asset.
Professional Accreditation
The course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
Entry Requirements
- A minimum of a lower second-class honors degree (2:2) and GCSE Grade C Maths.
- Relevant degree disciplines include geography, economics, finance, a traditional science, a property-related discipline, or law.
- If the first language is not English, an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component is required.
