Business of Film MA
Overview
The Business of Film MA is a professional development program for students whose career aspirations include supporting, financing, and marketing good films. This course is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills in the business of film, delivered in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI).
Course Structure
The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, industry guest speakers, practice-led case studies, and placements. It emphasizes group work, with students participating in small and large-scale projects, while gaining an understanding of the fundamentals of the film business.
Core Modules
- Creative and Business Acumen: This module will support students in developing the business-framing and entrepreneurial mindset to make things happen in practical ways in the production of films.
- Developing Your Film Career: This module reinforces the professional development and collaborative approach to career development in the film business.
- Distribution, Exhibition, and Marketing: This module introduces and explains the demands of marketing, distribution, exhibition, and festivals and their role in the film business.
- Film Business Final Project: The Business of Film Final Project synthesizes the skills and experience derived from modules across the course and relevant to the student's prospective career pathway/sequels.
- Film Finance and Funding Models: This module is designed to provide students with an understanding of film finance, financial management, budgeting, investment, and funding, and reporting in the film industry.
- Film Industry Work Placement: This core module encourages students to inform and focus their studies and aspirations by undertaking a work-based placement within an existing organization or through association with an individual.
- International Film Industry and Global Markets: This module will offer students the opportunity to develop an advanced knowledge of the global film market and the variations in the territories within it.
- Introduction to the Business of Film: This module aims to introduce students to the scope of subject areas, activities, and contexts explored on the course, including a systematic overview of film industry organizations and international film business practice.
Entry Requirements
- A minimum of an upper second-class honors degree (2:1) or a lower second-class honors degree (2:2) and substantial relevant work experience.
- Applicants will be expected to have at least a year's experience of working in an editorial, creative, or business function within media or content industries.
- If the first language is not English, applicants should have an IELTS 6.5 overall, with at least 5.5 in each element.
