Course Structure

The course is designed to enhance career prospects through knowledge and understanding of industry best-practice, balanced with academic theory. The curriculum is structured to give students an understanding of the marketing communications channels and tools that underpin the development of an integrated marketing communications strategy.


Core Modules

  • Brand Strategy: This module explores the role of brand strategy within the context of the marketing communications environment, evaluates contemporary concepts of brand strategy, and examines their application to a broad range of organisations.
  • Consumer Psychology and Research: The Consumer Psychology and Research module draws on psychology, sociology, and economics, exploring the theoretical underpinnings of consumer behaviour and applying these learnings to marketing communications decision-making.
  • Advertising Management: This module discusses advertising for a brand, identifying important issues and concepts used in its execution, and gaining a critical understanding of advertising and brand management.
  • Digital Marketing and Innovation: This module introduces the contemporary digital marketing environment, considering innovative and disruptive approaches to digital marketing communications in a sustainable business context.
  • Promotional, Direct and Relationship Marketing: This module explores strategies and tools that focus on sales activation, engaging consumers, and delivering a short-term sales advantage.
  • Public Relations and Reputation Management: This module considers public relations' role in marketing and corporate communications, examining PR's origins, scope, character, and applications in creating and defending corporate and brand reputation.
  • Integrated Marketing Communications Project: This module guides students through the two stages of the IMC Project, helping them synthesise content from other modules with contemporary issues and theories from the industry.

Option Modules

  • Creative Development - Strategy and Process (MA route): This module involves students in a semester-long exploration of the Creative Development Process that most creative agencies engage in.
  • Data Analytics for Marketing (MSc route): This module is a deep dive into the world of data collection, analysis, and marketing decision-making based on research.

Professional Accreditations

The course is accredited by the Institute of Data and Marketing, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. Students may be eligible to take the exam for the Certificate in Digital Marketing from the IDM and qualify for membership with the CIPR.


Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of a lower second-class honours degree (2:2) or alternative professional qualifications with at least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • If the first language is not English, an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component is required.

Teaching and Assessment
