Introduction to the Therapeutic Radiography Program
The Therapeutic Radiography program at Birmingham City University is a challenging but rewarding career path that combines science, technology, and patient care. This program is designed to teach students how to work with patients of all ages, helping to relieve and/or cure the symptoms of their cancer.
Program Overview
The program is a full-time, three-year course that leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. It is accredited by the Society and College of Radiographers and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Course Structure
The course is divided into three years, with each year consisting of 120 credits of study alongside clinical placements. The program utilizes a variety of teaching methods, including face-to-face activities, online learning, and simulation-based training.
Year One
In the first year, students complete the following core modules:
- Radiotherapy Science and Technology 1 (40 credits)
- Radiotherapy and Oncology Studies 1 (40 credits)
- Academic Skills and Knowledge (20 credits)
- Professionalism and Patient Care 1 (20 credits)
- Radiotherapy Clinical Practice 1 (0 credits)
Year Two
In the second year, students complete the following core modules:
- Radiotherapy Science and Technology 2 (40 credits)
- Radiotherapy and Oncology Studies 2 (40 credits)
- Further Academic Skills and Knowledge Preparing for Research (20 credits)
- Professionalism and Patient Care 2 (20 credits)
- Radiotherapy Clinical Practice 2 (0 credits)
Year Three
In the third year, students complete the following core modules:
- Radiotherapy Science and Technology 3 (20 credits)
- Radiotherapy and Oncology Studies 3 (40 credits)
- Professionalism and Patient Care 3 (20 credits)
- Advanced Academic Skills and Knowledge Research (40 credits)
- Radiotherapy Clinical Practice 3 (0 credits)
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- 120 UCAS Tariff points
- GCSE English Language or English Literature and GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above
- A Level, BTEC, or other level 3 qualifications in relevant subjects (e.g., science, biology, chemistry, physics)

Fees and Funding
The tuition fees for the program are Ł9,790 per year for UK students. International students are not eligible for this program. Students may be eligible for funding support, including the NHS Learning Support Fund, which provides at least Ł5,000 per year for maintenance and associated study costs.
Clinical Placements
Students spend at least 50% of their time undertaking hospital-based clinical placement learning. This provides them with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting and develop their skills and competence as therapeutic radiographers.
Facilities and Staff
The university has invested over Ł500 million in its facilities, including state-of-the-art simulation suites, skills labs, and equipment. The program is taught by experienced staff who are experts in their field and have a strong focus on research and professional development.
Employability
The program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to become competent and autonomous therapeutic radiographers. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and can pursue careers in the NHS or private sector. The program also provides opportunities for students to develop their employability skills, including mentoring, interview skills, and job application writing.
