Introduction to the Nursing - Child - BSc (Hons) Program

The Nursing - Child - BSc (Hons) program at Birmingham City University is designed to support students in gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver professional and compassionate Family Centred Care. This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and aims to develop students into graduate nurses who can work flexibly across a range of settings.

Overview of the Program

The program is a full-time, three-year course that includes both theoretical and practical elements. Students will study a range of modules, including "What is Nursing?", "Assessing Needs and Planning Care", "Providing and Evaluating Care", and "Introduction to Leadership and Teamwork". The course also includes placement learning experiences, where students will have the opportunity to practice their skills in real-world settings.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must meet the following entry requirements:

• 120 UCAS Tariff points from three A Levels, with grades BBB or equivalent
• Required subjects: Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology, or a Science subject at A Level or level 3 equivalent
• Excluded subjects: General Studies, Critical Thinking, Extended Project
• GCSE English Language or English Literature and GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above
• Applicants must also complete an interview as part of the selection process

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the program are Ł9,790 per year for UK students. Nursing students will also receive at least Ł5,000 a year in additional funding for maintenance and associated study costs.

Course Structure

The course is delivered using a modular approach, with students completing a range of modules across three years. The modules are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of nursing practice, including:

• Year One: Introduction to nursing, assessing needs and planning care, providing and evaluating care, and introduction to leadership and teamwork
• Year Two: Complex care, improving quality and safety, leadership and co-ordinating care, and professional practice
• Year Three: Nursing care for children and young people, medicines management, leadership and decision making, and delivering high-quality, safe nursing care

Employability

Once qualified and registered with the NMC, graduates can practice in the UK and many countries overseas. Employment opportunities exist in a range of settings, including the NHS, private sector, community, and GP surgeries.

Facilities and Staff

The program is based at the City South campus, which features state-of-the-art facilities, including a mock operating theatre, wards, and a home environment room. The university also has a range of simulation equipment, including simulation men and babies, to support student learning. The course team includes experienced academics and practitioners, who provide support and guidance throughout the program.

Accreditation

The Nursing - Child - BSc (Hons) program is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), ensuring that graduates meet the standards required for registration as a nurse.
