Program Overview
Human Resource Management CPS [Level 5]
Course Overview
Develop your skills and knowledge as a HR practitioner by achieving a CIPD-approved qualification to progress your career. Approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) at Intermediate Level, the course supports current and aspiring HR professionals. Associate Membership of CIPD is available when you successfully complete the course, enhancing your future employability.
The course is set at undergraduate level and includes students from varying business backgrounds. You’ll develop your ability to evaluate the effectiveness of HR models and practices, while also developing your understanding of wider business operations. You’ll develop personal planning skills too – drawing on both organisational and academic data to see how HR management and HR development make a contribution to business.
Based in our new, purpose-built Business School at our Oxstalls Campus, Gloucester, you’ll build connections and enhance your knowledge and skills. Our lecturers are current and active business professionals, experts and researchers who apply real-world industry experience to their teaching.
Study Style
This one-year course bridges the Foundation and Advanced levels of the CIPD qualifications. You’ll study one afternoon/evening a week or an equivalent alternative as a block delivery. The course is assessed by coursework, such as essays, presentations and portfolios, and you’ll be supported by a Personal Tutor throughout the course.
Development of knowledge and skills – in both HR and academic study – is facilitated through shared learning in the classroom. So, in addition to tutor teaching, you’ll participate in problem-based learning through case study, presentations where ‘students are experts’ and analysis of podcasts/videos, as examples. You’ll also undertake your own reading and research to consolidate your formal learning.

- Professional and Ethical People Practice (BM5908)
- The global workplace is becoming ever more complex. Changes in legislation and shifting ethical values now frame a wide range of organisational people management policies and practices. Rising employee expectations are driving changes to organisational approaches to the employment relationship. As a result of this, new contemporary people management practices are being adopted.
- Against this changing landscape, this module will explore aspects of the employee lifecycle comparing organisational practice with people management theory to enable students to generate new people insights to support organisational high-performance. Alongside this, students will be asked to reflect, evaluate and plan for their own personal and professional growth to enable them to be an effective and ethical future people practitioners in this complex and ever-changing world of work.
- Scheduled Contact Hours: 24
- Independent Learning Hours: 126
- Assessment
- 001: 60% Assignment: Individual: 1500 words or equivalent
- 002: 40% Assignment: Individual: 1000 words or equivalent
- Data Insights to Shape People Practices (BM5909)
- People professionals are being asked more and more to work in an applied business discipline, going beyond the HR function to understand more fully the wider business issues and its impact on people practices. People professionals now need to generate insights through data and information, use evidence to make decisions and demonstrate the impact of interventions.
- With people professionals now being increasingly asked to be ‘savvy consumers of data’ and adopt an evidence-based approach to organisational decision-making, this module leans into this shifting landscape through the topics and activities. Students explore the theoretical approaches to effective decision-making for contemporary people management but also put this knowledge into practice using a consulting approach.
- Scheduled Contact Hours: 24
- Independent Learning Hours: 126

- 001: 100% Assignment: Individual: 2500 words or equivalent
- Courage & Influence in a Changing Digital Workplace (BM5910)
- Contemporary workplaces evolve in response to external pressures, particularly those resulting from social, demographic, and technological changes. Employees desire and employers strive for the creation of ‘good’ workplaces that enable all stakeholders to thrive. Creating such ‘good’ workplaces is a challenge and can often involve significant change. For some employees change can cause anxiety and worry but for others it is exciting, keen to look to the future and adopt new ways of working.
- During this module students will explore the perspectives of different stakeholders and investigate how to drive effective and welcome change that is sustainable. Students will review a range of theories and assess their effectiveness for organisational practice. Students will also have an opportunity to practice their own persuasive communication skills - written and verbal - in managing a change process.
