Overview

Our Engineering HNC will give you the skills required in electrical and mechanical science, together with mathematics and other engineering studies.


The course is equivalent to the first stage of an undergraduate Engineering degree. This qualification offers a specialist programme of study which provides you with the key knowledge, understanding and lab-based practical skills required in the engineering sector.


Engineering HNC at UON provides a nationally-recognised qualification (HNC 120 credits), offering career progression and professional development and opportunities to progress to HND and then on to an honours degree programme.

Entry Requirements

The course is designed to support the Engineering industry by providing highly skilled and motivated individuals that have the opportunity to progress into a broad range of engineering careers. Those without relevant work experience may enter the course with one A-level qualification or MM at BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, as well as GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or recognised Level 2 equivalent).

Formula Student

Engineering students at UON can get involved in our Formula Student project.


Formula Student challenges students to design and build ​​​a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events, to demonstrate their understanding of the vehicle while testing its performance.

This Engineering HNC programme has been designed to provide the flexible option of one or two-year attendance. The modules have been designed to explore the many areas of engineering and give the student a sound understanding of the analytical subjects related to engineering as well looking at the Engineering Industry and developing important skills in Engineering Design. You will undertake individual and group work to enhance your communication, research and presentation skills. You will also explore the use engineering drawing and the production of engineering models and drawings using computer technology. You will also study analysis of the key areas of quality standards sustainability project management and ethics.


To gain the HNC qualification, you must complete six compulsory modules to a total of 120 credits and it may be possible for you to progress onto the Engineering BSc (Hons) qualifications at the University of Northampton on completion of this course.

Where will I be taught and what is the schedule?

This qualification is taught at the University of Northampton Waterside campus and offers full-time (2 days a week – 2 semesters) and part-time (1 day a week, 2 semesters per year) study options.
